Amazon to Sell 12 Million Kindle Devices in 2011
Pin It
Just read this morning in the Silicon Alley Insider that Amazon is projected to sell 12 million Kindle eReaders in 2011! According to the analyst, that might just be a conservative amount, but it goes to show the popularity of the Kindle itself!
Just a year ago, analysts were predicting the demise of the Kindle thanks to the iPad. However, Amazon still managed to sell over 7 million Kindles in 2010, so the demise of the Kindle was so obviously wrong! The article referenced above mentions a few things that helped Amazon save the Kindle, and I thought I would make a few points about it myself:
The Kindle is CHEAP! - Starting at $139, the Kindle is accessible to almost anyone at that price. You can purchase a Kindle for much higher if you need the 3G, on the go, wireless capability. But for most, the Wi-Fi capable $139 Kindle works just fine. iPad's start at $399, making the cost a bit too high for most consumers.

The Kindle is portable - If you don't want to carry the Kindle (and the newest version is very small), you can still carry your ebooks with you. Provided you have an iPhone, Android, or Blackberry. Or read your books on your computer. Amazon has made Kindle content very accessible, and available where you want it.
The Kindle is very niche - Which is to say that the Kindle does one thing and does it very well! The iPad can function as a computer, with a variety of applications that can be accessed on the device. The Kindle is a book reader, and a light one at that, but that's pretty much all it does. When a product is so focused, the product can only get better at what it does best!
Massive amount of material - Amazon tried to set the price for books at the same $9.99 for everything on the Kindle. Publishers balked at this, and eventually won the right to determine their pricing model. This agreement helped more publishers enter the ebook world, and thus more material for the rest of us. Still, most books are $9.99 even now, so consumers weren't hurt by the pricing model skirmish.
Potential - The Kindle has the potential to push into a color version, much like the B&N Nook has already done successfully. If this happens, Amazon will probably still keep the current Kindle in production because they are very proud of their e-ink technology, but we would see further price reductions on current models.
So what do you think of the future outcome of the Kindle? Do you think it will continue to grow as a viable eBook platform device? Or will it suffer against the iPad? Let us know in the comments below!
