Apple iPod 6th Generation Nano Reviewed

Some Apple iPod products are really built for the cute or "how neat" factor, and I think the 6th generation Apple iPod Nano fits that perfectly. Apple has managed to pack a lot of new features into the 6th generation Nano, features that buyers of the Nano brand may really want. But there are also a couple of features that have been removed from the 6th generation Nano, so you'll want to factor those into the cost of purchasing new.
For starters, you'll notice that the Apple 6th generation Nano is much smaller than previous versions. The screen, at only 1.5" in diagonal width, pretty much takes up the entire device. And because it's so small, or maybe by design, Apple has made the screen on the 6th gen Nano a touch screen (like it's iTouch and iPhone brethren). No more using the click wheel to find your favorite music, or to skip past songs that you don't want to listen to.

And if you don't particularly care for using the touch screen, then you can just shake the iPod 6th generation Nano, and it will take you to a random song on your Nano. Apple also included Genius on this version of the Nano to help select music based on your preferences. So, while tiny, Apple is making it easier to choose your music, and I think that's probably important to Nano users, who tend to use the device as an exercise companion.

And speaking of exercise, the 6th Generation Nano features a clip for connecting to your waist, shirt sleeve, or wherever you want. Previous generations of the Nano required arm band or other latching accessories to keep the device still while jogging or running. But with the clip, the 6th generation Nano stays secured where you want for the duration of your workout.
The 6th Generation Nano still includes the FM radio of previous generations, so you can listen to your favorite morning DJ during your job. And the 6th generation Nano still functions as a pedometer to keep track of your exercise distance. If you want, you can attach the Nike Sport Kit (not included usually), and sync your music to your workout. Plus have the ability to upload your data into Nike's website for use in seeing how you are meeting your exercise goals.
Not used as much, the Apple 6th Gen Nano still included VoiceOver for helping to select music. It can read the descriptions attached to your music, so you don't have to look down and read them yourself. It will also find music for you on the device if you say the artist, album, or song out loud. You'll need the Apple earbuds that have the microphone attached to the wire to use the feature, which is probably why it isn't used as often. If Apple included these earbuds, then people would definitely use VoiceOver, as it is very handy.
One thing you might not like about the 6th Generation Nano is the lack of video capability. All the tiny 1.5" screen can do is show the artwork associated with your music. It cannot play video for you. If you used your older generation Nano for video, then you'll want to consider the iTouch or iPhone as an upgrade. Apple apparently felt that the screen on the Nano was just too small for quality video usage, and wasn't necessarily a benefit to owners of the Nano. You will have to decide what investment you have in video before purchasing the 6th gen Nano. My opinion is that the Nano has usually just been for the exercise crowd, and was hardly used as a video unit, which caused Apple to remove the video ability.

The 6th Generation Nano is available in 8Gb or 16Gb storage capacity sizes. With the absence of video, that's 2,000 to 4,000 songs (respectively), and I can honestly say that I don't know of anyone that "owns" 2,000 songs, so these seem like ample storage sizes. You can expect 24 hours of continuous use before you need to recharge, which is again benefited by the lack of video playback.
Overall, if you are a fan of Apple products, love the options of the Apple store, or need a music device that's small enough to carry on your daily exercise routine, the Apple 6th Generation Nano is a great little device to check into. If you want your music device to double as a video player, then the iTouch would probably be a better solution. Even the older version Nano's just don't have the screen necessary to enjoy video at a size that's right.

Bargain Price Watch: Amazon has the 6th Generation Nano for $143 for most colors, but the graphite is still fairly high at over $170. Used 6th generation models are available on eBay for substantially less.
