If you happen to frequent the well-known bookstores in your hometown or areas, you have probably noticed the little wooden cars for sale known as Automoblox Minis. That goes especially true for those of you who might have a child that loves cars as much as ours! For those of you who haven't seen the wooden cars, Automoblox Minis are usually sold in sets of three at stores like Barnes and Noble, Books-A-Million and most independent toy stores.
I spent a fair amount of time this afternoon playing with my son and his four Automoblox minis and we had a great time! I didn't expect much from them since they are so simple looking, but changing out the cars to build new and funky cars was a lot of fun.

Also selling online at the Automoblox website (as well as in collectable format on eBay), Automoblox Minis are these neat little cars that are built around beech wood segments that are crafted to look like car bodies and with attachments of wheels, windows, spoilers, and bumpers (in some cases). The cars catch your eye because of the simplicity of the toy. If you are old enough to remember playing with wooden blocks as a kid, you might remember how much fun it was to stack and build with them, and play was only limited by the number of blocks you owned.
The same goes for the Automoblox Minis! Each of the cars can be taken apart to allow your child to redesign more cars from their own imagination. While using simple wood for the body, the designers have handcrafted a special grommet like connection to each wooden piece, which allows the cars to share the pieces. So while you might purchase an Automoblox Mini that looks like a truck, a sports car, or a van, the child can make their own sports truck, car/van combinations, and use the differing colors to redesign completely!

I should mention that the second part of the Automoblox "fun" that caught my eye was the price. Each of the cars sells for about $12 each or $30 for the 3-pack, and seems excessively expensive at first. So I needed to research the cars and see exactly why the high price tag. And the reason I found was just pure quality. Each car has a heavy amount of engineering behind it to make 100% sure that each segment that is meant to be shared among the other Automoblox Minis cars actually does fit.
Once the car body is built, the rest of the car's construction is hand-built. Each of the grommets is placed in by hand, and the correct tires, wheels, and windows are applied. Designs on the bodies of the cars are minimal (except for just a couple), but what designs there are will have been painted onto the car. There are no stickers used in the design process.
Well, that's not completely true, as there is a sticker on the bottom of the car, but it's a special sticker. Each car has its own VIN number, which can be registered with Automoblox, just like a real car. Real cars are all unique due to the number, and each Automoblox Mini (and Original) is also original. Register the car and receive a certificate with your child's name shown as the owner.

If you have thought about purchasing a pack of Automoblox Minis cars before, but just couldn't stomach the $30 price tag, take a look at what's available above. You can find single cars for sale for less than $10 a piece and even a few single Automoblox minis that have been retired for less than $15. Apparently, we are not collectors in our home since we spent a bit of time crashing the cars together. But after having them for months, they are holding up extremely well from just a little bit of light crash play.
