Black Diamond Camalots are in my opinion the absolute best cams on the market today. As with pretty much all things there are around three reasons why one should choose Black Diamond camalots over the others on the market. The range of the camalots is probably the best reason to choose Black Diamond. With 9 different sizes, with a huge range between the 10, there should be no (safe) cracks that you can't plug one of the BD cams into and stay safe.

Black Diamond Camalot C4 List Price: $59.95

With range comes the color coded aspect of the Black Diamond camalots. When you are on the wall, you don't want to fumble around with different varieties of cams and all of their different colors (or no colors). So staying with just one brand is absolute helpful and necessary. Thankfully Black Diamond makes it easier by color coding the cam lobes and the slings so they are easily identifiable. Most other cam manufacturers do color code the slings, but not the lobes, so you're getting a little extra benefit with the Black Diamonds.

Black Diamond Camalots are also extremely strong, although almost all cams have a pretty high strength ratio. The sizes most people purchase (.75 to 6) are all rated at 3,147 lbf and with the three small lobed cams in diminishing strength down to 1,798 (8kN to 14kN). What makes them better though is the weight. The biggest Camalot 4, the size 6, is just 20 ounces. That's for a cam that has a range of 4.5" to 7.68"; not too shabby! The rest of the Black Diamond Camalot C4 cams range from 75 grams up to 381 grams (2.5 ounces to 13.4 ounces), making it pretty easy weight-wise to carry a full rack.

Typical climbers will normally start out with a rack of cams from the .5 to 5 range as that should provide enough for most climbs. For longer climbs, I do recommend doubling up on the cams as money permits. And that's probably why you are looking at this page anyway. You don't really want to purchase a whole rack; just one or two to provide more of what you need during your climbs.
