BMW Isetta Bubble Car

Under the auspices of "going green", we are seeing a resurgence of small cars being manufactured as if the current generation is the only one to have ever thought to make cars smaller. But long before now, there have been small, even micro cars, and one of my favorite is the BMW Isetta, or the Bubble Car!
The BMW Isetta was a four-wheeled micro car first built in the early '50's by the company Iso. In fact, Isetta is a play on the Italian words for "little Iso". Iso built the Isetta for some time before deciding upon licensing the design and tooling of the car to other companies so that they could focus on a new sports car in design. Thus, among the companies that purchased the licensing was BMW.

BMW built the Isetta to their own specifications, by using a BMW single cylinder 247 cc motorcycle engine. But the features that people liked the most, namely the front opening door and the short rear wheel spacing in the rear were kept. BMW did change the location of the headlights on their version of the Isetta, making them part of the sides of the car instead of being built into the front fender area.
When BMW sold the license for the Isetta to Isetta of Great Britain, it was found that the car would sell better with only a single wheel in the rear, even though safety was more of a concern with only one wheel. The reasoning for the three wheeled Isetta was that the car could be driven much cheaper if it were classified as a three-wheeled motorcycle. The British BMW Isetta also had to have additional weight added to the left side of the car due to the British driving on the right-hand side of the car. This meant that both the driver and the engine's weight were disproportionately located on the right-hand side of the Isetta!
