Books That Have Changed My Perceptions: Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace

Most of us have a book or several books that when you read them, they changed the way you think about your life (work or personal), your finances, or just your attitude! I thought I would share a few of my favorites that have caused a great change in my thinking and in the way I approach life! I've put them in order of my reading them, to chronologically show my progress of learning, and as the articles on each are written, I'll link to that post. Also in keeping with the bargain atmosphere of the site, they are all priced low!

#1 Book to Change My Perception: Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace
Back in January of 2001, we had a 2-year-old little girl, expecting another child in May, and we faced a mountain of debt that just seemed insurmountable. A friend sent me a copy of Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace (also known as The Total Money Makeover today), and it changed my perception of how to run a household budget. When we married, we felt like we were supposed to have the things others had, so we maxed out our credit cards, then applied for more as the maximum was met. Not a good way to live! At the time of getting this book, we could not pay the bills, and I was having to call the CC companies to ask for a lower monthly payment so we could just get by. Can you imagine actually calling a credit card company to lower the minimum? In 2001, they were already so low that you almost paid more in finance charges than principal, so we were pretty desperate!
Dave Ramsey and Financial Peace helped me to see how I was giving someone else control over my finances, when I should be taking control myself! So, I wrote out a budget to try and curb our spending. I also called the CC companies and told them that i was dividing out how much each company would get from me percentage wise. Some balked at that, but everyone fell in line eventually. After that, we were able to pay off a good bit of debt pretty quickly.
As of today, we don't use credit cards; only debit cards when we have to. We still use the cash system we learned from Financial Peace and Financial Peace University. We still have a little debt, namely the house and student loans, but hey, I said we had a mountain of debt! It's been 9 years since we started down the debt-free road, but on one income, I think we've done very well. I would have liked to have been debt free by now, but "Life Happens", as Dave Ramsey says, and sometimes you have to step back and pay for other things first. I would say we are within 1.5 years of being debt-free, except for the house! So, Dave Ramsey immediate success stories we are not, but we are diligently plowing along, and we'll get there!
