I think that most of us dream of doing something more with our lives besides working 40, 60, or (gasp) 80 hours a week for a company week after week.  For some, it might be to travel the world.  For others, the dream might be to be able to spend more time with their family.  And then others may want to see the world, but help those who are less fortunate or support environmental causes with a hands-on approach.

Tim Ferris is one of those who has done just that!  He simplified his life (as shown in his book The 4-Hour Work Week)so that he spends more time on doing the things he wants to do, and much less time on doing the things that aren't interesting.  No more of the day-to-day upkeep of his business:  he hired virtual assistants (or VA's) to help with that type of work, including the more mundane tasks of checking email.  He puts the responsibility of running his businesses in the hands of others he hires whom he can trusts, gives them a level of monetary trust (between $100-$400 depending on what they are doing), and relieves himself of needing to be in the middle of every problem or situation that might occur.  By removing himself from tasks that aren't enjoyable, Mr. Ferriss is able to basically do what he wants, which tends to center around traveling the globe, learning new languages, and enjoying new hobbies that he might not otherwise had time to pursue if he continued to kill himself with work!

With The 4-Hour Work Week, Tim has outlined how we can all go about transferring our daily work tasks to others, or simplifying the way we run our lives so that we can have more time to pursue the interests that will make you feel like you are actually living your life instead of allowing others to run it for you!

So, how has The Four Hour Work Week changed my perceptions?  Well, with the realization that I don't actually have to do it all to get ahead!  Just take this website for instance.  There are well over 1,000 posts and pages here detailing all types of different products and services that we think are good bargains for our visitors.  Did I write all of these posts?  No way!  There are just too many variables that go into each and every post:  researching products that fit the "bargain" keyword, determining if there is even a market for the products we list, designing each page to show the best priced products, and then verifying the statistics to confirm that you, our loyal visitors, are actually interested in what we are writing!

So, I've streamlined my online businesses by hiring several wonderful helpers, and I think the posts have taken a more upbeat and positive tone since hiring my VA's.  I've also streamlined the work I do for my 8-to-5 job.  By using Tim Ferriss' ideals put forth in The Four Hour Work Week, I don't constantly check my email all day long (including the Crackberry).  I don't use Messenger nearly as much in the office, which prevents those nagging little questions we get daily on an instant messaging system.  I've also stopped accepting invitations to every little meeting that I am asked to attend.  I either let one of my employees go for me, or I decline.  Sometimes if I decide to attend, and it's not worth staying for, I will just leave.  I wouldn't do that before, and would waste an hour or two on a worthless meeting!

One thing I haven't done, and don't plan on doing right now as suggested in the book, is to start migrating away from the office and trying a remote lifestyle.  The kids like where we live, and I kinda like working in the office, so that part of The Four Hour Work Week is on hold for awhile.  But I won't say forever, since there are so many parts of the world that I would love to live in for a few weeks at a time (New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, etc.), so those locations and the activities I would like to try are all a part of the "dreamline" experience Tim talks about in his book.

Tim has a new expanded version of The 4 Hour Work Week available right now, and it's on the New York Times Bestseller's List.  I have it and the original book, and if you can afford the $12-$20 for the expanded, I say purchase it.  There aren't a lot of used versions available, I'm assuming because everyone that buys it, loves it, but if you can find a good used copy of the original 4 Hour Work Week below, I can say it's worth the money!
