Available in USM or non-USM (DC motor for autofocus), Canon gives you a couple of options depending on what you need in a telephoto lens. For the sake of this article, we'll focus more on the Canon 75-300mm USM lens.
The Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 USM lens is geared more toward those of you who are interested creating photographic images of wildlife in action. The USM, or micro ultra-sonic monitor allows the lens to quickly shift focus from one range to another with far less noise than the f/4-5.6 75-300mm lens without the USM built in. But quiet focusing should not be just for those in the wild, as we can think of all kinds of reasons to have a quieter camera: tennis matches, golf, weddings, and any number of recitals could benefit from your having a quieter focusing camera.

After the USM addition, and a few asthetics, the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM lens is the same as the lens with the DC motor. You still benefit from a compact design, one of the smaller sizes in a telephoto lens coming in less than 5" long. It also has the same close focus range, less than 5 feet. As a bargain finding site, we have to recommend the Canon f/4-5.6 with the DC motor since it usually comes in around $40-$50 cheaper than the USM model. But if you really need a quiet lens, as quiet as you can get, then the f/4-5.6 III with USM autofocus is your best bet!
