The Canon ELPH 310 camera (or the IXUS 230 HS for those outside the US) is Canon's latest try at making a camera as small as possible without reducing any of the abilities of the cameras from its predecessors. Or, on second thought, maybe the Canon ELPH 310 is really meant to provide more abilities than previous ELPH digital cameras, but in the same package? Yeah, that's probably actually what's going on here!

What Canon has done with the ELPH 310 HS digital camera is to provide a better processing system for low light conditions. In previous ELPH models from Canon, you had 28mm wide angle lenses with high magnification in zoom in a tiny little pocket-sized camera.

That's still available in this camera of course (or I wouldn't bring it up). But with the addition of an ISO range of up to 3200, the photographer using this camera can pretty much shoot in any light and still get super high quality and highly detailed photos.

Even though the Canon ELPH 310 HS is small, at 4/5" of an inch thick, the lens is capable of providing 8x optical zoom. That's with the aforementioned 28mm wide-angle, Canon lens providing the 8x optical zoom. In fact, that 8x zoom equals out to a 224 millimeter telephoto lens, if you think in equivalence of a 35mm lens. It's just hard to imagine so much zoom coming from a tiny package, but it does.

The Canon ELPH 310 camera can also shoot HD video in 1080p format, which is an upgrade also from previous ELPH cameras. At 24 frames per second, you will find that the quality of the video you shoot is going to be much higher than you expected. But if it isn't, or if shooting high speed targets, switch the video to 720p HD video and get 30 frames per second. That should help in any choppiness you see in your videos.

So what's not to like about the Canon PowerShot 310 camera? Just one thing really, and that's the LCD screen. It's not the size of the screen that's the problem though. It's a good-sized 3-inch LCD screen, like most other cameras priced above $150 today. And it's not the glare of the screen, as the Canon ELPH 310 camera's LCD is designed for the photographer to angle the screen up and down, left or right, and not notice a huge difference in glare or color issues.

No, the problem is that the Canon ELPH 310 camera doesn't have a touchscreen LCD. Oh is that all, you say? Yep, that's all! You see, most people that want an easy to use camera, really want it to be "easy to use", and a touchscreen makes it much easier to work with a camera right of the box. But if you have a lot of experience with cameras like we do, or even just a little bit of experience, working with the buttons for framing your photos or making camera selections should be fairly easy.
