The first thing you need to know about the Canon EOS 60D DSLR camera, the latest offering from the X0D line, is that it's not an upgrade from the previous cameras. One would think that the Canon EOS 60D would be Canon's replacement for the 50D, but it's not. Instead, Canon has decided to draw the Canon Rebel camera owner up into the next level by offering a camera that's more like the Rebel in shape, style, weight, and features, but upgrading everything to give them a reason to upgrade.

That being said, there are a few features on the new Canon EOS 60D DSLR camera that differ significantly from the 50D. The first is the easiest to spot: the 18 megapixel resolution on the 60D camera versus the 15 megapixels on the 50D.  Using a DIGIC 4 processor and a new CMOS sensor, the Canon EOS 60D camera is able to create sharper and cleaner images than its predecessors.  The ISO range is also higher in the Canon EOS 60D camera with a range between 100 and 3200, and expandable to 6400.

With the Canon EOS 60D, you'll get 5.3 frames per second in continuous shooting which turns out to be around 60 images in succession when using JPEG, or 18 images in RAW format. That's a bit slower than the 50D with it's 85 images in succession, but we attribute the fewer images to the higher resolution images that are being processed by the 60D's image processor.

The Canon EOS 60D DSLR camera also features the latest in LCD technology, the variable angle LCD. The LCD (known as Vari-Angle) opens to the left of the camera body, and can swivel left and right or up and down to a display that is more comfortable for the user than other DSLR camera LCD displays. With 30 frames per second display the view on the LCD will be just about as seamless as you could want from an LCD display. Of course, the viewfinder is positioned where needed, and is designed to feature around 96% of the image being captured.

You'll have to step up to the 7D to get more points on the AF sensor than the EOS 60D offers. The AF or auto focus on the Canon EOS 60D is virtually the same as it's "predecessor" with 9 cross-type points. The 60D does however include a 63 zone sensor which checks the color and brightness of the subjects being focused upon to select the best possible focus for that subject at that time.

For those of you who want HD video from your DSLR camera, you'll get full 1080p video from your Canon EOS 60D camera. At full 1080p, the camera can capture up to 30 frames per second of video (25 is preferred), with the number of frames going up to 50 or 60 fps when the resolution is lowered to 720p or 480. Videos will need to be 4 Gb or less in length, so if shooting long bursts of video, it would be beneficial to reduce the resolution down a bit.

If you are a previous 50D owner, you may want to step up to the Canon EOS 7D camera for additional features and to further your photography experience and bypass the 60D altogether. But for the Rebel owner, especially the Rebel T2i owner, the Canon EOS 60D DSLR camera is a great step-up into the X0D line of cameras from Canon!
