The Canon PowerShot A3000IS digital camera is a budget camera, pure and simple. Those looking for feature-laden cameras will want to look elsewhere, but if your main or only goal is to snap great photos without the need to do a lot of prep work or without a lot of extra equipment, the Canon PowerShot A3000IS could be your camera!
This doesn't mean that the Canon PowerShot A3000IS isn't a feature packed camera, because it is. As with most compact or sub-compact cameras, image stabilization is an absolute necessity, just because it can be difficult to hold these small cameras steady. Those with large hands, like myself, spend a little extra time making sure we have all of our fingers out of the way of the lens and the flash, so the image stabilizers help tremendously.

The Canon PowerShot A3000IS camera also features 18 unique shooting modes for you to choose. While the shooting modes are there to make the camera easier to setup, this won't preclude you or the photographer from taking great shots whether in bright sunlight or night. In fact, the Canon PowerShot A3000IS has a special low light mode which removes the darkness and shadows from just about any situations. Allowing for highly detailed photos where other sub-compact cameras might fail.

Even if you don't particularly feel like choosing one of the 18 modes, the Canon A3000IS can make the job of taking photos easier. The camera has a built-in function named Smart AUTO, which when turned on, analyzes the environment it captures with the lens, and makes appropriate changes to the ISO, facial recogniztion, and shutter speed.
The LCD display on the Canon PowerShot A3000IS is just under 3" in size at 2.7", making it a bit smaller than you might expect. Sub-compacts do tend to run under the 3" mark, so this LCD is in the acceptable range. The screen features a bright picture for easier use in bright sunlight, but can also be toned down when attempting to shoot photos in almost complete darkness. Playback of both photos and movie clips is available via the LCD, so you can preview or review your shots on the spot.
Canon PowerShot A3000IS Camera Photos
Many higher priced cameras are going with touch screen LCD's, something we would have liked to seen here. But the low price of the camera probably prevents Canon from adding one to the PowerShot A3000IS. Hopefully in newer models of the camera, the touch screen will replace this LCD and it's multitude of buttons to the right of the screen. Keeping the body the same size probably wouldn't make the picture much bigger, and might require a wide-angle lens to be attached.
The Canon A3000IS camera will shoot movies in addition to capture photos, but they are not HD quality movies. Unfortunately, this is probably the biggest downside to the camera as the recording is only in 640x480. If you can burn the movies to a DVD disc and if you have a Blu-ray device that will upscale those discs, you will get a much better resolution. But right out of the box, you won't.
The Canon A3000IS also lacks in an HDMI output port. This makes sense since the movies aren't recorded in HD, but I find it much easier to connect cameras to my HDTV when HDMI ports are available.
Granted, these problems might not be a big deal for someone looking for a budget camera that takes great photos. HD videos are nice, as are upgrades in the LCD and ports. But if you concentrate on seeing the Canon PowerShot A3000IS camera for what it is, then you will see a bargain priced camera that makes taking photos on the go easy and very manageable!
