Canon PowerShot D10 Waterproof Digital Camera Reviewed

If you are in search of a good waterproof compact camera, there are several available in the market right now, but honestly none have as fun and funky a design as the Canon PowerShot D10 camera! Shaped like a little football or maybe a small balloon, the Canon D10 feels like there is a tiny little camera inside a waterproof case, and you just want to remove those screws and take a look!
Actually, you can remove the colorful front plate on the Canon Powershot D10 camera and replace it with another colorful cover IF you can find one. And I say if because while the camera was designed for this purpose, it's very difficult to find any color besides blue (which consisted or orange, steel, and a camouflage cover). But the blue does look great with the PowerShot D10, so we'll stick with that, and not take it apart!

Because the Canon Powershot D10 is a waterproof camera, the goal for Canon was to provide a camera that is capable of handling water up to a certain point. The PowerShot D10 can in fact do so, at least up to 33 feet, before the pressure does begin to get the best of it (you might be able to get just a few more feet, but it's not recommended). Waterproofing a camera does mean the performance of the mechanics of the camera will be a little bit more difficult to use, and the PowerShot D10 does have this issue as well.

To keep water out, the seals around the buttons create more effort in pressing, which will be something to remember when tapping the shot button. It's not a bad thing to have this issue, after all, we do want to keep the water out, but it is beneficial to work with the PowerShot D10 camera and its buttons prior to going to 30' below the surface.
As far as picture quality, the Canon D10 is a little more than standard for a waterproof camera. You get the typical 12.1 megapixel resolution with a fairly standard CCD sensor, which is standard, but the PowerShot D10's ability to recognize face and improve the focus based on faces greatly enhances your ability to take great shots. Using Canon's DIGIC 4 image processor, the camera can detect new faces into the shot, and track their movement, and greatly improve focus while doing so. Because of who the Canon D10 camera is designed for, we recommend to the Smart Auto feature along with the optical image stabilization mechanism to let the camera choose what scene to use for each shot, and to reduce or completely lose any blurring associated with fast moving subjects or hand shake.
It's not mentioned a great deal when reviewing the Canon PowerShot D10, but the camera is also capable of video recording. It's not HD video, but 480 format instead. But the quality of the video is greatly helped by the fact that it does record at 30 frames per second, making the video seamless with the choppiness on other cameras with less fps. Videos recorded by the PowerShot D10 are limited to 60 seconds, which will record up to around a 4Gb size, so if you start out with at least that large of a memory card, you should be fine.
As mentioned earlier, the Canon PowerShot D10 is a quirky little waterproof camera, but it has a nifty design that is unique enough to make it that much more enjoyable. Even though the body of the camera is essentially plastic, it feels far more sturdy than that, which might be helped along by the strong looking lanyard ports on each of the four corners.
We don't want to give the impression that the D10 is only for people who are into scuba diving, because waterproof does not always have to mean submersion. It's best to use a waterproof camera (or waterproof case) when out and about in nature due to the chance of rain. The Canon PowerShot D10 camera has a small enough price tag that purchasing one to take along on excursions will definitely be of benefit, and perhaps save the more expensive cameras for other trips.
