I always try to find a reason for a particular product to be purchased. There's really no reason for you to come to our site to read about the Canon PowerShot SD940IS camera without there being a real reason as to why you should visit here, and so I've tried to find something to make this camera stand out from the rest.
Sometimes that's just not possible, and the only reason I can really come up with to purchase a product is that it's cheap, or a bargain, or frankly good enough for the price you pay. And that's pretty much what I'm faced with when looking at the Canon Powershot SD940IS.

Among other ultra-compact, point-and-shoot cameras, the Canon SD940IS does carry it's weight with a 12.1 megapixel resolution, which creates nice soft photos, and the wide angle lens with 4x optical zoom does help create better group shots. You can get a more sharp or refined photo by using some of the manual settings, but most that use a point-and-shoot like the SD940IS just want to take photos, so softer edges is what you'll see.

And that's okay because I think my judgement on the soft corners may be a little clouded because I review a ton of cameras! Many that I review are 5-10 times as expensive as the Canon PowerShot SD940IS camera, and it really becomes apparent in what kind of clarity you can expect in the different camera price points. So with that said, a sub $200 camera should create softer focus photos, at least until a few more years pass and the upper echelon camera technology starts to trickle down!
The nicest part about for new owners of the Canon SD940IS centers around the 720p HD video recording aspect. And maybe not really the recording itself, but the fact that the camera does include a mini-HDMI port to play your videos (and still photos) from the camera directly into your HDTV or other component with HDMI ports. The HD video recorded by the SD940IS is made as high-def as possible by built-in image stabilization, which helps to reduce any blurring or shaking caused by movement within the focus area or your own movement.
Our honest recommendation on the Canon SD940IS camera is that you set the camera to auto mode, and just start shooting photos. The owner of the Canon SD940IS shouldn't be too awfully concerned about the manual settings, but instead should make most of their focus turn towards framing the shot. Let the Powershot SD940IS do all of the work, as much as possible, because it's designed to work for you.
If you are really interested in owning a Powershot camera, but want just a little bit more in the way of sharper or crisper photos, we recommend you take a look at the Canon SD1400IS. It's a little more expensive with additional features, and it's newer than the SD940IS. Some might point you toward the SD1300IS instead, but unlike the 940IS or 1400IS, the 1300IS does not have 720p HD video. It's almost a bit more expensive, and like from the start, our reason for purchasing the SD940IS is because it is in fact a good bargain point-and-shoot camera! Losing features while paying more just isn't an option when we have an interest in a camera like the SD940IS.
