Canon SD400 Review

Canon SD400 ELPH Camera lens view

I want to go way back to 2005 today on post with this Canon SD400 review. Why? Because while it's hard to believe that we've come from 2005 with ultra-compact cameras just being 5 megapixels to today's 14 megapixel ultra-compacts, there's absolutely no reason why you can't still use a camera like the Canon SD400 today.

No technology seems to get older quicker than cameras. Maybe computers turn from cutting edge to cutting room floor quicker (okay definitely), but it seems just as soon as you buy a camera there's another one, one model number higher, that's better. The Canon SD400 digital camera was the same way when it came out, as it was quickly followed up by the SD600. but the difference in megapixels (5 to 6) was honestly quite negligible).

So why would you go with a Canon SD400 camera now, after all these years when you could purchase a new camera with more "megapixels"? Well, after you get past 5 megapixels, you really can't see much difference in your shots that the megapixel rating offers. Have an Apple iPhone? Notice that the shots on it are only rated at 5 megapixels. No, they aren't the best shots ever, especially in low light, unless you are really good. But the iPhone gets the job done. The same can be said for the Canon SD400 camera. It's just 5 megapixels, but that'll do in most instances.

Okay, time to get real! When you review cameras for a living, it's kinda hard to go back to a 5 megapixel camera like the Canon SD400. But if it's all one needs, then it's all you need. The Canon SD400 was one of the first in the line of ELPH to proclaim itself as "smaller than a credit card", which was a huge selling point at the time, as Canon assumed correctly that people would carry cameras more if they fit in a pocket or anywhere a photographer might have space.

But why would you want to go with the Canon SD400? How about the ability to take 600+ shots on a single charge? If buying used, I recommend purchasing a new battery to accomplish this, but honestly there are few modern cameras today that can accomplish 600-700 shots on one charge. It's just not possible to find. If you are interested in taking almost endless shots without carrying around additional batteries, the Canon SD400 camera is still for you.

The Canon SD400 camera is also fast! Shooting at more than a second a shot (somewhere around 1.3 or 1.4 frames per second), you can load up the SD card with a lot of pictures fairly quickly. Now the SD4000 is still just compatible with SD cards, not SDHC nor SDXC memory cards. So, you are a bit limited on the speed of the memory used on the memory card.

Our Canon SD400 digital camera also includes a viewfinder, something not found on 100% of ultracompact cameras today and most point-and-shoot cameras in total. If you enjoy using a viewfinder, then the Canon Powershot SD400 camera is still a good choice for you.

Canon SD400 Camera Photos

With a 2-inch screen, it might be preferable to use the viewfinder, since you may find yourself squinting at the LCD display. The ELPH SD400 was created before camera makers started adding brightness levels to the LCD displays (outside of the top of the line cameras of course), so the display can appear pretty dim in bright sunlight. It's much better in low light settings, but then the camera isn't as good in terms of picture quality in low light.

I'll again say that it's difficult to go back to an older model camera when there are so many new cameras with the ability to generate fantastic shots with HD quality video. But there's something to be said about using a camera that is "smaller than a credit card", that can be stored anywhere, and that can shoot a lot of pictures in an extremely quick fashion. If you do want to look at a camera that's a bit more expensive yet more technologically advanced, take a look at the Canon Powershot SD1400IS. It's small and light, and still under $200 (less if purchased used). The Canon SD400 camera can be purchased for under $40 used or $80 refurbished. I hope you've enjoyed this blast from the past Canon SD400 review!
