Fiat 126 – the Small Car that Poland Made Famous

The Fiat 126 was a small car produced in several different countries between the years of 1972 and 2000, however the two main countries were Italy and Poland.  The Italian made Fiat 126, which was actually introduced in Turin, Italy during the 1972 trade show, was produced in Italy from 1972 through 1980. At its beginning, the 126 was a two-cylinder car with a 594 cc engine and front wheel drive. It was shifted to a rear wheel drive car almost immediately with the following model year. As time went on, the 126 was increased to a 652 cc engine to account for the increased cylinder bore size of 77mm. This increase gave the 126 the ability to run at 23 BHP using a four speed transmission. With the increased engine size, the wheelbase was also increased to 72 1/2" to accommodate the increase in horsepower.

During the 1972-1980 time period, the Fiat 126 was seen as a great success for Fiat as almost 1.4 million Fiat 126 automobiles were produced in Italy alone! However, it was costly to manufacture the 126 within Italy, so production was halted in 1980.

This was not the end of the Fiat 126, though, as the little car was extremely popular in Poland. Under Communist rule, salaries of the Polish people were extremely limited, and owning a car was almost unheard of. So, the low price of the Fiat 126 coupled with the economies of the state contributed to the success of the 126. The 126, re-branded as the Polski Fiat 126p in Poland (or PF 126P), was produced within that country between 1973 and 2000. The deep popularity of the little 126p car earned it a nickname with the Polish people: Maluch, which actually means "the small one".

The Polish manufacturers of the Polski Fiat 126p shipped the car to several other Communist ruled countries during this period, making the car one of the more popular items in those countries as well. And one of the best ways to see that a car is popular is to notice the nicknames give to it: Slovenia calls the 126 the Bolha which translates to flea. In Hungary, the 126 is known as the kispolák, which translates to small Pole. They also gave it a slightly humorous name of egérkamion which translates to "mouse truck".

For collectors of the Fiat 126, try and locate a 2000 model year Fiat 126. This particular model marked the end of the Fiat 126 line, and completed with two special limited edition colors: yellow and red. Fiat produced 500 yellow cars and 500 red cars and nicknamed them the "Happy End".  The final production total for the Fiat 126 worldwide closed at almost 5 million cars with the majority of the cars, more than 3.3 million of them, produced in Poland.
