Mercury Comet Review

The Mercury Comet is a classic staple in American automobiles, and has gone through five generations of models, beginning in 1960 and ceasing production in 1977. Manufactured through Ford, the Comet was originally set to be marketed as an Edsel model. Only in 1962 (two years into production) did the car finally take on the make name Mercury. This moniker change caused the new version to gain a little longer wheelbase, as well as a higher-grade interior than its sister model at the time, the Ford Maverick.

This first generation of the Mercury Comet was based on the design of the older Ford Falcon (that is, the Comets built before 1963, which were nicknamed the "round body" models). In March of 1960, the first Comets were produced with the only engine that was available, the Thriftpower, which generated 90 horsepower. There were two options for the transmission, a 2-speed automatic or a 3-speed manual. Body styles allowed for four different choices, which were the two-door coupe, four-door sedan, or a station wagon with either two or four doors.

Complaints about the weak performance of the original engine accounted for the 1961 model being equipped with the ability to produce 101 horsepower, as well as an optional 4-speed manual transmission. The following year, as mentioned, Comet took on the Mercury name, as well as a bit of a redesign to match Mercury's other models (which mainly included a minor taillight and trunk upgrade). The Comet Villager, a custom station wagon of sorts, was also introduced. A year later, in 1963, the only major change to the design was added space for an optional 164 horsepower V8 engine.

The second generation of Comets began in 1964 with a body redesign, making the car more squarish and angular than the previous round body. The two-door station wagon was discontinued, but the custom, higher-end Villager continued production. The new models were also equipped with a larger standard engine. In 1965, at the end of its second generation, the Comet received an updated design, and a (yet again) larger engine. The 3-speed manual was still the standard transmission, but a 3-speed automatic was also introduced this year.

The Mercury Comet continued throughout its remaining 12 years with minor body changes and progressively more powerful engines (including the GT version introduced in 1971). The classic Mercury was discontinued in 1977 to be replaced by the newer, more modern Mercury Zephyr in 1978.

Above you will find as many Mercury Comets for sale as we could possibly locate today! Most of the cars will be within the 1960's model year ranges, but there may be a few outside of that from the 1970's.
