The Porsche brand began in 1948 with the launch of the Porsche 356, which makes the Porsche 356 the first automobile the company put into production in volume. The 356’s body is rounded and simple which is a trend that many current automobile manufacturers are going back to. It was described as “highly functional and very well built” and its design has roots in Volkswagen creation.

The Porsche 356 was obviously also the company’s first sports car and was available in coupe or convertible. The engine came in various sizes from 1.1 to 2.0 liter and the horsepower ranged from 46 – 82 at the time of production.

In 1956 the Porsche 356A was introduced with increased horsepower and better suspension. Unlike the first model, it sported a one piece windshield.

In 1960, the 356B was introduced with emphasis on the new high set bumpers and enlarged windows. The 356B offered three different engines with horsepower up to 115. A power sunroof was also optional in this model.

The 356C was the last model of the 356 line of vehicles. The engine was upgraded and the 356C boasted a maximum horsepower of 170. There were few changes to the body style and outward appearance of the C model. One way to differentiate between it and earlier models was the new flat faced hubcaps. The company sold this automobile well into 1965 as the demand for the vehicle remained strong well into the early days of its successor, the 911.

The 356 will always be a popular vehicle for automobile enthusiasts, while the Super 90 and Speedster models remain the most popular. In the early 1950’s, they were sold for around $4000. Today, it is normal for them to bring in between twenty five and a hundred thousand dollars at an auction.
