The Second Generation Toyota MR2 (MKII), a 2-door coupe, was completely redesigned in 1989, by Kazutosh Arima Tadashi Nakagawa (roadster) and available for the 1990 model year to the Japanese and European market. The changes made to the MR2, caused it to be sometimes called the “poor man’s” Ferrari, because of its cross resemblance to the Ferrari 348tb and the Ferrari F355.
Minor changes made throughout the design of the new Toyota MR2 included an increase in length by 9.3 inches, which made it 164.2 inches long. There was a 3.2 inch increase in the wheelbase, which made it 94.5 inches and the width was increased from 65.6 inches to 66.9 inches. The newly designed MR2 also weighed 350 to 400 pounds more than the previous model and the bodylines were smoother, making this model larger and classifying it as a GT. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) ranged from approximately $14,400 to $18,500.

Although the redesigned Toyota MR2 became available to the Japanese and European market in 1990, Toyota did not introduce it to the U.S until 1991.
The three trim levels received by Japan were the G-Limited (2.0L 3S-GE engine with 163hp), which was available in a standard 4-speed automatic transmission and an optional 5-speed manual transmission. The GT and GT-S both featured a turbocharged 2.0L 3S-GTE engine with 261hp and a manual transmission and able to accelerate from 0-100 km/hour in 5.6 seconds.
Three trim levels were also made available to the European market: Coupe (2.0L 3S-FE engine with 138hp), GT Coupe (2.0L 3S-GE engine with 158hp) and GT T-bar (2.0L 3S-GE engine with 158hp). However, the turbocharged model was not made available to the European market.
The two trim levels made available to the U.S. were the Toyota MR2 N/A (2.2L 5S-FE engine with 130 hp) with a standard automatic and optional manual transmission and the MR2 Turbo (turbocharged 2.0L 3S-GTE engine with 200hp) with the 5-speed manual transmission and able to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.1 seconds.
Production of the MR2 MKII lasted until 1999, but 1995 was the last year it was sold in North America.
