With the explosion of tablets, mini laptops like the Dell Inspiron IM1018 netbook have taken a backseat. For those of you who like to browse the internet, pilfer through Facebook or Twitter, or anything casual, then a tablet is probably a very good thing for you and not much else is needed.
For those of us who need to actually get work done (checking email isn't really work; responding is but that's another story) the tablet leaves off one important factor that a mini netbook like the Dell Inspiron IM1018 still provides like a champ: an actual keyboard. Yes, tablets can be outfitted with a few bluetooth keyboards here and there for $60 to $100 a piece, but that's kinda silly. First of all, you completely take away the ease of carrying a tablet if you add on a keyboard. Now you've got to carry two items. The Dell Inspiron IM1018 netbook has the keyboard attached in a casing that isn't much bigger than a tablet anyway. So bonus!

The Dell Inspiron IM1018 netbook also has a bigger screen than a tablet or at least bigger than the iPad 2's 9.7-inch screen. At 10.1", the Del IM1018 mini is large enough to see easily, which is a good thing since while using a keyboard the display will be a bit further away than one holds the typical tablet.
There is more space or disk drive storage available on the Dell Inspiron IM1018 netbook as well, again compared to the iPad 2. 160Gb of storage holds a ton of data compared to the measly 16gb, 32gb, or 64gb configurations on most tablets (most never buy the 64gb by the way). If you still want to use the cloud to hold your data, you can, but with 160gb it's not a necessity.

And one final note about how the Dell Inspiron IM1018 mini netbook compares more favorably than a tablet: built-in case. If you want to purchase a cute little case to put your netbook in, then absolutely you can, but there's not a need to do so. Just like all laptops, it folds up in itself so the display is far less likely to be damaged in transit. Tablets? Gotta purchase that extra $30-$70 case to wrap around your new toy.
The netbook does normally sell with Windows 7 installed, and that's really the only reason I can see not to like the device. Windows 7 is a good operating system of course, but I much prefer Ubuntu Linux for my operating system. If you do as well, it shouldn't be too difficult a task to switch it out.
Tablets do come in handy of course. They are easier to maneuver around with at the office, and for a quick check and reply to email, they are very handy to have. But I do a ton of typing for the product reviews I do here and on my other sites, and the difficulty of not only typing on a tablet screen but also flipping from one browser tab to another is so difficult, I'd much prefer to have a good old laptop. The Dell Inspiron IM1018 netbook for sale above is a good cheap bargain solution for those needing to get real work done on the go.
