Duracell Instant USB Charger Review

I think it's safe to say that everyone that owns a modern cellphone, pda, smartphone, whatever, isn't completely happy with the battery life. My own phone, the Apple Iphone 3GS, doesn't last a day on a charge with my typical two five-minute calls, and (okay constant) internet searches. The battery life isn't a problem usually, as I'm sitting at my desk at work, so I can charge it fairly easily. But the battery problem does rear its ugly head once I go on a trip that has me outside for hours at a time. I'm talking about vacation where we might be at the lake, the beach, the mountains, or at a theme park where we might be using the phone to snap pictures which obviously runs the battery down, yet we have no option for charging the iPhone. That's where this neat little Duracell Instant USB charger comes in!

What the Duracell Instant USB charger gives you is peace of mind that even if your battery runs completely down while out and about, you can still have contact with the outside world. With the iPhone and only 20% battery life left, I can get a full charge in around 45 minutes to an hour using the Duracell Instant USB charger. That equates to around 3 hours of cellphone talk time as stated by Duracell. But my phone tends to discharge quicker than their rating, so I would say it's closer to 2.5 hours. That is still more than I typically talk on my phone. But use information in considering how many pictures you take with your phone, or how much the internet capabilities, GPS, or games are used, and you'll find that the low cost of the Duracell charger is well worth having the unit.

For MP3 players or the Apple iPod, Touch, and Nano devices, you will see between 35 and 50 hours of increased usage time. I do not own any of these devices, but because manufacturers tend to overstate the power of their devices, I would go with the low end maximum charge. Still 35 hours is a long time, and will certainly keep those using the devices (kids in the backseat) happy for a long, long time!

As far as charging the Duracell Instant USB charger itself, it can be recharged several hundred times before the output begins to wane. The lifetime of the charger is pretty much limitless, so if you only use it for certain trips or vacations instead of daily, it should outlast the life of your smartphone or MP3 player. Using the charger daily will of course limit the lifetime, but if a power supply is not available constantly, the Duracell is a good choice.

The charging of the Duracell Instant USB charger is fairly simple. You will need to connect it to a running computer via the USB cable that is included to charge the unit, or purchase an additional wall outlet that accepts USB connections. The iPhone has one of these connectors, so if you have that, you should be fine to use it.

The Duracell Instant USB charger is not sold fully-charged, so charging the unit is going to be your first priority. It will take 1.5 to 2 hours to fully charge the Duracell, so be prepared for that. Be sure to purchase it BEFORE your trip if you need it to work DURING your trip. Once charged, it can be instantly used to charge your other devices. If you want to save it for later, just turn the power button to OFF, and that will keep it from discharging prematurely.

You will not need to completely run the Duracell Instant charger down before recharging it, so go ahead and recharge it before you need it. A red indicator light on the side lets you know when it's being charged, and turns green when fully charged, so you will know when it's ready to go!

After seeing the Duracell Instant USB charger in action, I can't think of a better way to keep devices charged while on the go this summer. Yes, you can count on the charger in the car, or maybe recharge your phones and MP3 players in your hotel room, but you won't always be there. Slip the light 3 ounce Duracell in a bag, purse, or pocket, and keep power handy no matter where your travels take you!
