Although the Hummer H1 only had short production period of 14 years, it is sure to become a classic. With its rugged good looks, and wide wheel stance, the Hummer H1 looks ready to climb up the walls. It got its good looks from the M998 military Humvee (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle). That would be military terms. The military model is massive, with its 16 inches of ground clearance, the Humvee has no problems with rolling over a 22inch boulder. There was a definite demand for this aggressive looking machine in the civilian market, and the Hummer H-1 was born.

The Hummer H-1 was produced in three body styles,
the four door hard top, four door soft top, and the fully inclosed wagon. Other lesser known styles, are the slant back and the two door and four door truck bed models. Early models of the Hummer H-1 have seen a variety of motors and transmissions.

All of these Hummer H1 models were very good in their own right, but in the last year of production they pulled out the stops when put a Allison 1000-5speed transmission driven by a 6.6 liter Turbo diesel LLY Duramax engine, well any issue of the H-1 being under powered was settled at that point.

The H-1 shares allot with it's big brother, they were born on the same assembly line. The frame, axles, brakes and body parts are the same as the military Humvee. The Civilian models go to a seperate paint booth, but other than that, they are pretty much the same.

The Hummer H-1 as a vehicle is far from your run of the mill SUV. The Hummer H-1 wasn't designed to go get the groceries, although it could do so very well, and you would not have to fight over a parking spot

They really weren't made to tool down the highway. They were designed to go pretty much where you wanted them to go off road. Hummer H-1's are built wide for stability, this makes them a little cumbersome on the highway. With 16 inches of ground clearance, and the engines air intake and electrical components up out of the way, H1's can travel through 30 inches of water with ease. Hummers are true off road machines. Most H-1's are equipped with a central tire inflation system that give you the ability to inflate or deflate tire according to the terrain.
It's a shame that we have lost another American Icon to the price at the pump, But you can be sure, that the Hummer H-1 will become a Classic.
