I find it interesting to think back to when we needed to carry around large radio to have "portable music" in our offices or on the go. Or at least you did if you didn't want to wear headphones all day long. Now all anyone ever does is to wear headphones, as if we're shutting out the rest of the world and just sitting in our own listening to what we want and not allowing anyone else in. If you are tired of shutting out everyone, if you are worried about your hearing, but you still want great sounding music, then the Jawbone Jambox could be the perfect fit for you.

The Jawbone Jambox is a portable speaker that actually is very portable with the size being just around 2" x 6" and a thickness that makes it resemble a rectangular block. It is larger than other portable speakers, but the sound quality is far, far better than those $20 speakers that sit on the endcap in the Wal-Mart electronics department.

However, with the better sound quality as well as the features of the speaker itself the price of the Jawbone Jambox is substantial. At around $180, you have to really have a use for the portable speaker along with the ability to play it on the go without annoying your co-workers (think cubicle land).

If the Jawbone Jambox was only a portable speaker, I would not be writing a review of the device today, but of course it is much more. The speaker is Bluetooth ready, something you may have already guessed it would have since the maker is a high profile Bluetooth manufacturer.

Using Bluetooth makes the Jambox even more portable since you need no wires to pair up the speaker to your devices that have this technology: iPhone, iPad, most laptops, Android phones, along with many more portable music storage devices all have Bluetooth within and can easy be paired with the Jambox. For those that do not, well, there is still a jack to plug into the portable speaker (and a tiny cable doesn't take up much room anyway, right?).

With the Bluetooth technology, the Jambox can also be used as a speakerphone for your smartphones. For those who have home offices, but don't want the expense of purchasing extra phone lines, the Jambox is a perfect solution for phone meetings without kinking your shoulder to continue working. Just answer the call from your phone while hooked to the Jambox and communication is seamless and clear.

Battery life for the Jambox is rated at around 10 hours, but I think 8 hours of continuous use is more likely. The batteries are integrated into the speaker, so it will need to be charged via USB when the battery runs low. Because the speaker is lean, there is no onboard way to see the battery life, but it does provide a way via an app on Apple devices to see the battery life as it gets closer to zero.

Just like other USB charged devices the Jambox can be used while being charged, so you will not lose the availability of it during that time period.

As usual, we are providing used versions of the Jawbone Jambox above, but we do want to alert you to issues with old firmware updates on the device. If you do purchase a used version, please make sure to do the latest firmware update. One of the old updates gave the speaker some pretty terrible sound quality when played through a few devices, so just in case, do be sure to update the firmware immediately upon arrival.

I will absolutely agree that the Jawbone Jambox is fairly expensive, but I can also say that the speaker is probably one of the best wireless and Bluetooth ready portable speakers on the market today. No other is as small as this device and none other can play for so many continuous hours without dropping the Bluetooth pair. If wireless performance is just as important as sound quality, then the Jawbone Jambox is probably the right choice for you.
