Lay Low – the Patsy Cline of Iceland
Pin It
When you are able to sell an album to 3% of an entire country's population, that just has to be a great album, right? Well, even though that country is Iceland, Lay Low has done just that with her new album Farewell Good Night's Sleep (via Amazon). I just heard Lay Low on NPR This Weekend performing the album's title song of Farewell Good Night's Sleep, and it's easy to hear why people love her music so much! It's an eclectic style of music, drawing inspiration from US country artists from the 1950's era such as Patsy Cline with her soulful voice.
There's something else there, though. Her voice, and her band's sound seem more original, or maybe even better than today's music. Lay Low doesn't sound digitized like today's artist, and I'm pretty sure she doesn't use Auto-Tune. Which means the voice you hear is hers; the band's sound is their own. And that's what great music should be. We should hear the artist for who they are, and not for who a producer thinks they should be. In a phrase, if they can't sing, they shouldn't; if they can't play, I don't want to hear it. That's the way I feel about Miley Cyrus (yuck!), but Lay Low has a sound that hasn't been repeated in several decades, and does sound very original.
If you haven't heard Lay Low's sound, try it out below from Amazon. I tried to find Lay Low on Pandora, but she isn't there yet, but she is on Last.fm! So if you are looking for a bargain (ie free music), then Last.fm might be the way to go, but 99 cents for a song at Amazon is dirt cheap, and a preferred bargain in my book.
Let me know in the comments below what you think of Farewell Good Night's Sleep! If you like one of her other songs better, let me know, or if you have another up and coming artist that you have discovered, share that as well!
