So how does Lensbaby The Composer work? After you insert the double wall optic into the Lensbaby Composer, you move the swivel to the desired location, and then manually focus on your subject. Your desired swivel location is what is known as the "sweet spot" and once you focus on the "sweet spot", you'll see a graduating blur surrounding the subject. Not happy with that choice? Just move the Composer again to another location, manually focus on the "sweet spot" and capture the shot! Once you get used to the manual swivel and manual focus, you'll notice that your creativity in creating shots will be almost impossible to stop!

If you are worried about wearing out the ball and socket of the Lensbaby The Composer lens, don't worry. The ball and socket of the Lensbaby is sturdy enough to stay in a locked position once you have it moved to the desired location that it will stay in the spot until you move it again. And if you still aren't convinced, the Composer lens is built with a lock ring to completely secure the lens. This should really only be used for extensive photography like in a studio where the lens will not be moved for hours.
All of this talk about manually focusing on your subjects may begin to scare some of you away from Lensbaby The Composer, but don't let it! If manual focus isn't something you are used to doing, then it may take several corrections at either the Lensbaby Composer swivel or at manual focus to line your shot up exactly like you want. But if you like photography, then you should learn how to use manual focus, and Lensbaby The Composer makes you learn, and opens up your creativity!
