Before I start on this review for the LG BX580 Network Blu-ray player, I would like to say that you can absolutely by cheaper Blu-ray players than the LG BX580. If all you want is a player that will play Blu-ray discs, then LG makes plenty of players that are far closer to $100 each than the LG BX580 Blu-ray player. But if your goal is to purchase a Blu-ray player capable of displaying 3D content and streaming content through your home, then you may want more than one of those throw away Blu-ray players. Read on as we look at the LG BX580 Blu-ray player as a way to step into 3D movie watching!

You will need a 3D capable HDTV to actually watch the 3D content, and the Active Shutter 3D glasses, so just having the BX580 player won't do. However, 3D content is coming to our homes soon and rather quickly, so if 3D is in your future, it makes sense to go ahead and purchase a player capable of handling the technology.
Okay, so if you don't want 3D right now, the LG BX580 Blu-ray player is still a great Blu-ray player because the 3D tech is just one part of the player. The BX580 can absolutely play standard Blu-ray discs just like any other Blu-ray player, and it plays them in 1080p (provided your HDTV displays 1080p). The purchase of an HDMI cable is required to connect the LG BX580 to your television, but just that connection and the power gets the LG BX580 Blu-ray player up and going quickly and easily!
The LG BX580 Blu-ray player can also be used as a streaming device, even streamed wirelessly if you choose! The BX580 includes the ability to stream from popular services such as Netflix, Vudu, and CinemaNow (which require a separate content fee). Streaming from Youtube, Pandora radio, Picasa (pictures), and even AccuWeather are available from the popular LG Netcast product.
Because the LG BX580 Blu-ray player is a network content player, content stored on laptops and other computers within the home can also be played across the BX580. The player includes software called Homelink which searches your devices for content, and plays them on demand at your choosing. While not as easy to setup as playing Blu-ray discs themselves, setting up Homelink is not very difficult if the instructions included are followed.
And finally, even if you don't have a 3D HDTV or even a single Blu-ray disc, the LG BX580 Blu-ray player can still be a useful Blu-ray player. The BX580 can play standard DVD's just like a regular DVD player can, which means you don't have to replace your DVD collection immediately or ever! The BX580 does upconvert the DVD's to a near HD quality performance, and is noticeable immediately. If you pop in your favorite movie, it becomes clear quickly that this player does a fantastic job of cleaning up the noise on DVD's.
Whether you are ready for 3D content or not, the LG BX580 Blu-ray player has a lot of options that will benefit your household until you are ready to go into 3D. If you are already there, the BX580 is one of the better Blu-ray players on the market for introducing 3D technology into your home. If not, it's ready for it when you are, but in the meantime the player still offers a lot for about the same amount of money as a regular network Blu-ray player.
