Can Am Spyder Roadster Review and Prices
There have been other 3 wheeled motorcycles produced, but none like the Spyder Can Am Roadster! This motorcycle is a unique and innovative machine manufactured by Bombardier Recreational Products, Inc. (BRP). It took 11 years from the first idea until it was available on the market in 2007.
This Beefy Can Am 3 wheeler has one rear wheel and two front wheels for steering. It is belt driven from the rear with a drive train power belt and looks similar to a snowmobile at first glance. The Spyder Can Am has a 5 speed transmission and a reverse and has a big 106 hp engine. There is a much needed anti-theft device that is included on this model.
The design of the Can Am Spyder motorcycle is quite different, so different in fact that some have been concerned about safety of the product. But if there is concern for some, there probably is very little concern regarding rollovers!

Just to ease worries, the engineers of the Can Am Spyder Roadster has built into the machine a Vehicle Stability System with rollover mitigation. This system enables the rider to have maximum control and should the motorcycle become instable, the stability system will take over and stabilize the motorcycle for the rider. This fact along with the traction control system and the anti-lock braking systems keeps this massive bike on the road where it belongs!
The sheer power of the Can Am Roadster Spyder motorcycle along with the massive size is the only 3 wheeler in this class of motorcycle.
To purchase your own Can Am Spyder at a bargain price, you will be looking for a late 2008 or 2009 model. 2010 and '11 models of the increasingly popular reverse trike are still priced in the $15,000 range, but the '08 and '09 can be found for less than $10,000. Thankfully if you do go with one of the older models, they are still quite new and so the parts that typically wear the fastest on a motorcycle will be readily available. Yet, those models are new enough so that not too many parts will need to be replaced at this time.
The model of Can Am Spyder that you choose is going to be solely based upon the type of motorcycle that you want. If riding almost exclusively by yourself, or the comfort of a passenger isn't the main concern, the Spyder RS base model will be sufficient for most. For those needing a happy passenger, the RT Spyder would be the more proper choice.
Both motorcycles have the same size engine: a 998 cc V-twin engine. The Spyder RT is far more bulkier, weighing in at 929 pounds as opposed to the smaller RS which just weighs in at 700 pounds. The RT carries more storage area, mostly wrapped around the rear passenger. With the increased weight, the wheels are upgrade from 3-spoke to 6-spokes, which also adds a bit more weight.
The Spyder RS is not surprisingly quicker than the RT, which is almost exclusively associated with the additional weight. You'll have 106 horsepower at your disposal at max RPM of 8500, compares to 106 horsepower at just 7500 RPM on the RT.
As you round up through the RS, RS-S, RT, RT-S, and on up through to the RT-Limited Can Am Spyder, you'll find that the changes to each model is different normally in only suspension, passenger comfort, and colors. Along with a few accessory upgrades to the fairings and wheels, the Spyder isn't designed as upgrades that you'll need to have to make the Roadster go faster or increasing performance spectacularly. No, the same engine is pretty much used on each of the differing motorcycles, and built around the same SST Spyder frame.
It's just designed to be based on what you, the rider of this extremely popular front front facing, three-wheel motorcycle. If a low-profile ride is what you are after while still looking for something original, the base model Roadster should do perfectly. For making an extreme statement that you are in fact riding something completely original and different, the RT-S colors loudly proclaim your entrance!
