Harley Davidson Knucklehead Motorcycles

As a Harley enthusiast, you know that one of the more sought after vintage Harley motorcycles is the so-called Harley Knucklehead. The Knucklehead nickname was specifically given to this particular line of Harley motorcycles due shape of the V-Twin actually resembling a person's knuckles. However, the Knucklehead name did not become associated with this particular motorcycle until sometime in the early to mid 1960's when motorcycle chopper groups began to form. Harley had originally and formally called this engine the 61 OHV and built the motorcycle as a 61E or 61EL, which stood for the 61 cubic inch size of the engine and it being an overhead valve type engine. Owners of the motorcycle and other motorcycle enthusiasts of the 1930's and 1940's would more commonly call this particular Harley motorcycle an OHV, for it's overhead valve design.

The Harley motorcycles preceding the Knucklehead had been built as single overhead valve engines, which made the Knucklehead motorcycle models completely new and unique to the Harley enthusiast! However, not everything was great with the Harley Knucklehead motorcycle at the start of manufacture. Due to valvetrain problems Harley Davidson had to completely redesign the system for all models built after the engine problem was found, and also retrofit all Knuckleheads delivered and sold prior to the valvetrain crisis.

The 1936 through 1940 Harley Knuckleheads were available in 1000cc engines only, with Harley introducting a 1200cc engine for the 1941 through 1947 model years. If you chose, you could still purchase the 1000cc engine until 1947.

The Knucklehead engine gave Harley the chance to give their motorcycles a new way of referring to their motorcycles by creating engines that allowed the passerby a chance to identify what type of Harley they were seeing just by looking at the engine design. The panhead, shovelhead, flathead, blockhead, and fathead were all nicknamed with the engine styling in mind.
