Nikon Coolpix L120 Camera Review

Red Nikon Coolpix L120 Digital Camera

We review a lot of cameras here, but for the most part, the cameras we review just don't fit what we need. Some are just too much camera, and some are not enough. Some even are waterproof, and we rarely go near the water! But what I know we need is a camera with a mid-range megapixel rating, a high ISO, and a fair enough zoom that all work together to create great close-ups and maybe even better distance shots. And that has led me recently to start looking closer at the Nikon Coolpix L120. And yes, that means you'll be getting a Nikon Coolpix L120 review today (aren't you lucky)!

So why the Nikon Coolpix L120 camera? Well for starters, it does have a pretty high megapixel rating for a mid to upper-tier point-and-shoot camera. At 14.1 megapixels, the L120 is just about as high as you will find currently in this price range for a point-and-shoot. Backed up by a CCD sensor and Nikon's EXPEED C2 processor, you'll find nothing lacking about the quality of photos achievable with this camera.

Most photographers know that the megapixels, which need to be in the high range, will get you nothing but great shots in full sun if the ISO rating isn't able to back up the abilities of the camera. The Nikon Coolpix L120 steps up to the plate, so to speak, with an ISO range of 100 and increasing all the way to 6400! 6400 will allow some truly fantastic shots in practically no light whatsoever, which incredibly increases the range of this camera.

As is standard for Nikon, the Nikon Coolpix L120 camera features a glass NIKKOR lens to allow the capture of your photos (and HD video which I'll discuss in a moment). The wide-angle lens is perfect for capturing more of the surrounding environment, so you can zoom in extremely close without losing any of the detail you might want to keep. And with the 21x optical zoom feature of the lens, you can zoom in from incredible distances and still get a fantastic shot!

My main problem with zoom, especially too much zoom usually causes a problem for me and maybe you as well. Not because of the camera, usually, but because of my shaky hands. Thankfully most point-and-shoot cameras above the $200 price range have built-in image stabilizers, and the Nikon Coolpix L120 has one of the better systems. Nikon uses an image stabilization system that checks for shaky movement and blurring from five different directions on each shot taken. Using this directional method, the camera automatically shifts the sensor with movement to keep all but the worst of shaky photos to be produced blur-free. Image stabilization does increase the time it takes for a shot to take, so the option to turn off the stabilizer is available, but for me, it's gotta stay on.

One item on cameras today that I don't really need, and the Nikon Coolpix L120 camera is no exception, is HD movie recording abilities. I'm just not into creating video period, and probably would rather create it with a camcorder if given a choice. Movies just take up to much space on the memory card, and run the batteries down to fast for it to be a good feature for me. That said, the L120 is capable of capturing movies in 720p format at 30 frames per second. It's quick to switch to video recording also, with the one-touch button on the rear of the camera for quickly starting and stopping recording. For a point-and-shoot camera, that's about as much as you could want or ask for, and probably betters about 75% of the rest of the point-and-shoot available as of this writing.

Nikon Coolpix L120 Camera Photos

Because it's a point-and-shoot, there is not a viewfinder available, but most of us have gotten used to this and instead have become reliant on LCD screens. The 3" LCD screen on the Nikon L120 camera features a very high pixel rating of 921,000, for incredibly clarity at the screen. The screen does not feature much in the way of manually changing the brightness levels of the screen, but the anti-glare coating and the high pixels allow for increased maneuverability when shooting, so you don't always have to hold the camera directly in front of you when shooting.

All in all, we really liked reviewing the Nikon Coolpix L120 camera, and may add it as a personal point-and-shoot camera over the others available. The clear and concise photos coupled with the great megapixel rating, ISO range, and high zoom lens makes it a perfect little compact camera to carry on a daily basis!
