The Nikon Coolpix L24 digital camera looks like a great choice for you guys and girls who need a camera, but have a pretty low budget available. What happens in the budget compact camera market is that camera makers will give you a bit more in the way of megapixels through the sensor, and a nice sized LCD, but hold back on the high def movie abilities.

And that's exactly what Nikon has done with the Coolpix L24. The sensor has the upgraded ability to capture at 14 megapixels, and the 3" LCD covers just about as much space as can be expected from any camera that doesn't include a touch screen. Where are lacking is in HD quality video with the Nikon Coolpix L24. So the new owner of the Coolpix L24 probably needs to be more interested in high quality still photos with the secondary ability to record video when necessary.

The Nikon Coolpix L24 camera is practically the same camera as it's predecessor, the Coolpix L22, aside from the increase in megapixels to 14 megapixels available with each shot. When we initially reviewed the L22 and its 12 megapixels, we stated that the only thing missing from that particular camera was the higher resolution available in some of its competitors.

I don't expect that Nikon heard our review and made a change when designing the Coolpix L24, but I'm positive that we weren't the only ones that voiced our concern about not living up to that expectation. Thankfully Nikon has resolved that issue, making the Coolpix L24 one of the best budget compact cameras available today.

Keeping in mind that the Nikon Coolpix L24 is a budget camera, and thus might not have the latest technologies, the 3" LCD screen on this camera is still one of the best on any budget compact camera. Nikon used this same screen on the previous two L-series cameras, but thinking back, this particular LCD was actually surprising to be used on such an inexpensive camera. Now with the Coolpix 24, the LCD isn't as awesome in use here, but short of having a touchscreen, it still beats out most compact camera LCD's in size alone. With adjustable brightness levels and the ability to see it from angles, the Coolpix L24's LCD is still pretty top notch.

To go along with the budget pricing, the Nikon Coolpix L24 camera is also designed to be extremely easy to use. Instead of manually setting the camera up for the best shot, you have the option of selecting between 16 differing scene modes. Pick one, and the camera automatically adjusts settings like ISO for you. If choosing one of the 16 is still too much trouble, just set the Coolpix L24 to Easy Auto, and the camera will pick the scene for you, and adjust all of the settings accordingly.

The Nikon L24 also picks up on 12 different faces in the shot, and can alert you to blinking on the face being used as the primary focus. Eyes are also seen by the camera, and can be fixed with the red-eye mechanism built into the L24.

The lens itself is crafted from the highly regarded NIKKOR glass lenses. Like it's predecessor camera, the Coolpix L24 still has the same lens with its 3.6x optical zoom. Unfortunately, this also means that no optical image stabilizers have been added to the Nikon L24, but instead still relies on the motion detectors and VR to stabilize the images. Nikon's VR and motion detection system work great in normal light. However, the lower the light, the more you will find the need for an optical stabilization system. Very few budget compact cameras include optical stabilizers, so this does mean you'll have to go up a notch in price to get this feature.

I hate ending a review on something we don't like, but the lack of high definition video is going to be a bit of a problem as cheaper cameras get at least 720p. The L24's 640x480 maximum resolution is the most dated part of the camera, and will probably lead some to move on to some other camera because of it. But if high def video isn't your thing, but high definition still photos are, then the Nikon Coolpix L24 camera can still be a great camera for you!
