Nikon has taken the super zoom cameras to a new level with the latest release of the Nikon Coolpix P500 camera! Frankly there is little else that Nikon could have done with the P500 and still keep it in the point-and-shoot category. With 36x telephoto zoom, the longest zoom available on any CoolPix camera, and right with the longest of any other manufacturer, you will be able to shoot close-ups from practically from any distance.

Equally impressive is the Nikon P500 camera's ability to focus in on objects as close as .4 inches away. The superb 22.5mm to 810mm equivalent Nikkor lens is used practically to its limits by the P500.

And that may just be the only problem with the camera, as it's difficult for any camera to allow for such a wide range, using just one lens. The P500 camera can handle this range, but it's up to the photographer to get a quality shot at the two extremes.

The Nikon CoolPix P500 digital camera is the immediate successor to the Nikon P100, the previous holder of the longest CoolPix zoom. The P500 increases the zoom from 26x to 36x for an equivalent of 810 millimeters.

Because long zoom cameras lose stability with increasing zoom, Nikon designed into the barrel of the lens a feature that allows you to hold the camera more securely while setting the focus. This toggle lets you hold the camera by the lens and by the grip without needing to adjust with the normal zoom switch at the shutter button.

The Nikon P500 does include a 5-way VR image stabilizing system, which always comes in handy for people like me with shaky hands. But most of us, no matter how steady we are, will see some shakiness at the maximum zoom of the camera. So we strongly suggest, if you will be shooting at close to max zoom for an extended period, that you invest in a solid tripod.

The Coolpix P500 also includes an extremely high res LCD monitor. The 3" LCD monitor features 921k dots which is not typical of a point-and-shoot camera at all, and ends up giving a more real picture while shooting. The LCD monitor is tilt-able, allowing for shots from above or below when shifted to a comfortable level in a 180 degree range (flat against the camera being the zero starting point).

With such a high quality LCD, you would expect that the camera could also shoot high res video, and you would be correct. The Nikon CoolPix P500 camera can shoot at 1080p, and can play the video back through your HD components with the built-in HDMI output. Video is easily started with the press of a button, conveniently located next to the shutter button. It's just as easy to switch back to photo mode.

The electronic viewfinder is also available at all times, and would most likely be preferred in the longer zooms (except in video possibly). The viewfinder is sharper than the LCD monitor, and may lend itself to be used more frequently becuase of the high resolution.

The Nikon P500 makes taking panoramic photos much easier than its predecessor. Just change the camera to panoramic mode, press the shutter, then turn the camera in any direction to capture the panoramic scene. The camera will determine which way you turned, and stitch the pictures together accordingly.

The Nikon P500 digital camera is a bit more expensive than it's competition, but it also includes so much more and can do much more for you. It's practically a DSLR with the features included, but without the price, and without the need to so much setup prior to taking the shot. It's as close to the best of both worlds as you can get in Nikon's world today!
