The Nikon Coolpix S6000 camera is basically the cheaper version of its cousin, the S8000, but with many of the same features, such as 14.2 megapixel resolution, the ability to record HD movies, and the fantastic EXPEED processing system. So if it includes so many of the same features, why is it so much cheaper? With our review of the Nikon S6000 camera, hopefully we'll show you why the price difference, and maybe you'll find that the options that are different are well worth the reduction in cost that the S6000 camera has over the S8000! Even some, like the better wide angle on the S6000 camera, might make this camera the better bargain.

The Nikon Coolpix S6000 digital camera features 14.2 resolution against a CCD sensor, which is typical for digital cameras with HD movie making abilities. The lens is a Nikkor ED lens capable of 7x optical zoom which is actually pretty awesome considering that the body of the camera is just an inch thick. The Nikon S6000 camera's lens is a 28 millimeter wide angle lens, and actually betters the smaller 30mm lens designed into the S8000 camera.

The Nikon Coolpix S6000 features a bright 2.7" LCD screen, leaving a good amount of room to the left of the screen for the camera's controls. As someone with fairly large hands, button placement is pretty important, and the Nikon S6000 camera seems to have placed the buttons in a pretty good position for such a small compact camera.
The Nikon S6000 camera is plenty capable of producing great video also! With the ability to record at 720p resolution and 30 frames/second, the video turns out nice and crisp with no choppiness associated with the recording itself. The S6000 is able to record up to 1 1/2 hours of video on one charge of the battery, so you'll want to pick out a fairly large SDXC card if plans are to record movies of that length (the 32 Mb of internal memory won't do). Nikon does state that the camera will stop recording after 29 minutes of constant use, but in all, you'll get 1.5 hours.
The Nikon S6000 digital camera is also equipped with one of the better stabilization systems, in the Nikon 4-way VR stabilization system. The VR system reduces blur associated with quick subjects discovered in the focus range of the S6000 by making adjustments to the ISO and the speed of the shutter to capture the best photo for you without a lot of work on the photographer's part.
And finally, the Nikon S6000 also features the Smart Portrait System (also found on the S8000 camera). Smart Portrait uses the facial recognition software of the S6000 camera to locate up to 12 different faces in your photos and smooths the faces found to create a more realistic, and less digital looking picture. Smart Portrait also recognizes when your subjects are smiling and automatically takes the best photo. It also holds for a second when subjects blink, allowing for the blink to finish and then taking the photo. The Nikon Coolpix S6000 camera really takes the work out of photography!
Currently at $100-$150 less than the S8000, the Nikon Coolpix S6000 digital camera features many of the same high tech features, but with less of the cost. The size of the screen is a bit smaller, but the lens is a bit better. For those reasons, the Nikon Coolpix S6000 digital camera is a great bargain compact camera that we think is a great choice for entry and mid-level photographers.
