Nikon Coolpix S6200 Camera Reviewed Versus the S8200

When a company releases two cameras with fairly similar attributes at the same time, there is usually just one reason for it to do so: price. The Nikon Coolpix S6200 digital camera is a great little camera in its own right, and really should be considered by itself as to whether its a good buy. But the real reason for the Nikon S6200 being made available at the same time as the camera we recently reviewed (the Nikon S8200) is because Nikon wanted to provide the more bargain oriented customer the same functionality but at a price that they could afford.
In fact, the Nikon Coolpix S6200 camera can be found for around $100 less than its more expensive sister camera, but with that steep a price difference, are the functions on the Nikon S6200 good enough to keep you in that camera instead of the more expensive one? The Nikon Coolpix S6200 camera is a 16 megapixel unit which features a true resolution of around 9.7 megapixels and a high light sensitivity of 3200, just like the S8200. However, to keep costs down, the S6200 camera does use a CCD sensor instead of the higher quality CMOS sensor.

Most photos will not typically show this difference, but the more zoom used or low light available, the greater the chance that you will see a difference if able to compare the two side-by-side. With that said, the aperture on the S6200 camera is slightly more and allows a bit more light, so the low light issue might even be negligible.
The Nikon S6200 camera also benefits from being a smaller camera than the 8200. Smaller in all dimensions, including weight, makes the S6200 Coolpix just that much more portable. But with a smaller camera comes other small portions. The LCD is 2.7" instead of 3-inches. The zoom is only 10x which is significant compared to the 14x zoom in the more expensive camera, thus giving you less range in telephoto mode (250 millimeters compared to 350 millimeters). So the reach of the Coolpix S6200 camera isn't as good, but hey we're still saving a good bit of money here.
The Coolpix S6200 features HD video also at 720p for 30 frames per second. This favorably compares to other cameras in this price range, with the camera shopper needing to go a good bit higher in price to get full 1080p or 60 frames per second.

Still, we like the Nikon Coolpix S6200 digital camera if the purpose is to maximize your dollars without going to $200 or higher to get value and quality. The features here are are fairly compatible to the higher-end camera so much so that most point-and-shoot camera buyers will probably not notice much difference (unless comparing side-by-side like we do). If 1080p, a larger LCD, or more zoom is necessary, then by all means the S8200 is the better choice. But our visitors love bargains, and the S6200 from Nikon fits that role completely!
