Blue Nikon Coolpix S80 Digital Camera

The Nikon Coolpix S80 digital camera, one of the newest compact point-and-shoot cameras this year (as of Fall '10), includes all of the features made populer with the S70 camera, and has added enough new features to warrant looking into this latest offering. With upgrades in resolution, a new image processor, a more compact design, and the ability to shoot pictures in quick succession, the Nikon Coolpix S80 camera offers enough that you may sell your S70 and go with the Coolpix S80 instead. Add to the nifty styling and assorted colors available with the Nikon S80, and you get a superbly designed camera in the S80 that's fun to use, but serious when it needs to be.

First off in our review of the Nikon Coolpix S80 camera is the resolution upgrade. The S80 features 14.1 megapixels of resolution using a CCD sensor to capture a more premium shot than with the S70. Using virtually the same lens, a 5x optical zoom, wide angled Nikkor 35mm-175mm lens, the Nikon S80 point-and-shoot camera allows for the same close-ups and wide-angle landscape shots as the S70, but the difference in the resolution of the S80 will be apparent in either extreme.

To help with blurring and to keep the photos crisp, the S80 uses both optical and hybrid VR image stabilization technology. Lens shift and electronic VR help to minimize any camera shake you experience, or lessen the noise associated with fast movement in the frame. The EXPEED C2 image processor is also designed into the S80 camera, rounding out a superb image capture engine that's designed specifically for the compact S80.

What we like best about the Nikon S80 camera is it's ability to shoot in continuous mode at 1.3 shots per second, a feature that wasn't available on its sister camera. And if you choose to use it, Nikon has introduced a new item called "Best Shot Selector". Best Shot Selector lets the photographer take up to 10 shots continuously, and then the camera picks the best shot out of the ten, saves it, and discards the rest. Best Shot Selector monitors the shots for the cleanest, clearest, and most in focus shot to find the best 1 out of 10, saving you an extra step.

The Nikon Coolpix S80 has the same large 3.5" organic LED screen as it's predecessor, which means you also benefit from the screen being a touch screen as well! Because of the compact design of the Coolpix S80, the camera itself is virtually without buttons. Instead the touch screen carries the majority of the work involved in selecting menu options, editing photos taken, sharing photos and videos (via playback), and a host of picture editing tools. For many the trade off on the touch screen may be what makes or breaks the device. If you don't mind the iPhone-like interface, then you'll enjoy the touch screen of the S80. If the photographer would much rather have the normal buttons associated with a camera, then you may want to look at a point-and-shoot camera that's built more like a DSLR camera instead of a compact.

If you've ever held and/or used the S70 camera, you might have thought that it was just about as small as one could get and still be a viable option in a high performance consumer camera. But Nikon has actually made the Coolpix S80 even smaller than it's predecssor! Granted the S80 is 2mm larger in both heighth and width, so I'm really referring to the 3 mm in depth decrease. But having a more shallow depth makes the Nikon S80 even more portable than before, while still allowing for the same features as the S70, and with an increase in overall picture quality.

And finally, the Nikon Coolpix S80 digital camera still allows for HD quality video recording. At 720p, you'll have the near best possible video you can have in a similarly sized point-and-shoot camera. Using Nikon's subject tracking feature, the S80 camera maintains focus while recording by continually adjusting the focus to create the best possible video, even with fast moving subjects.

If you are searching for a high quality point-and-shoot camera in a compact design that can be used for everyday use, the Nikon Coolpix S80 camera is a good camera to put in your list of choices. With its focus on automatic scene selection, stabilization systems, subject tracking, and blink recognition, the Nikon Coolpix S80 was designed to allow regular consumers a chnace at creating photos and HD video without the hassle of setting a camera up properly. The S80 is a fun little compact camera to use, and if you choose one of the more pronounced body color combinations, a fun little camera that creates interest in others who will want to use it as well.
