The Nikon D3000 Digital SLR Camera was unleashed late last year, and has proven itself as a great choice among the entry-level Digital SLR competitors. It features a 10.2 Effective Megapixel CCD sensor which allows for prints up to 20”x30”, and a 3-inch LCD monitor. All of this for a price under $500!
Impressively, the Nikon D3000 camera also comes packed with a high-quality 18-55mm lens with Vibration Reduction, so right out of the box, the budget photographer is capable of wide-angle to portrait-zoom shots. Surprising in this entry-level DSLR, the sensor has self-cleaning functionality (a feature previously only in the most expensive of DSLRs), a strong auto focus system, and 3 frames-per-second shooting. All of these make this camera a very attractive buy for someone just getting out of the point and shoot world, and into the world of high-fidelity photography.

The Nikon D3000 camera's sensor supports ISO 100-1600, meaning it will handle in situations ranging from bright sunlight to night shots with little trouble. Keep in mind, though, that since this is an entry-level camera, it is to be expected that high-ISO shooting will result in significant losses in quality. The good news is that at low ISO with decent light, the quality is outstanding for the price. On top of that, the good focus accuracy and RAW-mode image quality makes this a real beast in small, compact package.

Thankfully, the cheapness of the Nikon D3000 is centered more in price than it is in build quality. Reviews have congratulated Nikon on their ability to such an ergonomic, strong body for the D3000. The buttons and User Interface are intuitive, and the grips make it easy on the hands even for longer photo shoots.
What you lose with the Nikon D3000 is the ability to make movies, which is a common feature in the newest of DSLRs, and the “Live Mode” function, allowing you to see the picture on the screen instead of having to look through a viewfinder. You also lose some of the more advanced features like D-Lighting control and bracketing, but for the price, these are decent sacrifices if you’re not wanting to use the camera for film-making and professional photography.

Bargain Price Watch: The Nikon D3000 is currently priced low at $449.95 at Amazon (see the product above). This price does reflect the Nikon D3000 with the 18-55mm lens included. The D3000 was priced as high as $549 as recently as October, which makes the current deal around $100 less.
