Olympus PEN E-P2 Micro Four Thirds Camera Body

The Olympus PEN E-P2 Digital Camera was released shortly after it's predecessor, the E-P1. So shortly after that critics and consumers speculated whether the E-P2 was simply a "repaired" or "prettier" version of the E-P1. The truth is that these models are very similar. The main difference is that the E-P2 has an electronic viewfinder, a significant improvement from the E-P1's optical one.

The Olympus E-P2 features a 12.3 megapixel sensor and a generous 3 inch lcd color screen but don't rely on this screen to judge details or colors. It just doesn't have enough resolution to be that accurate and you're better off waiting to upload your photos to your pc. As with most digital SLR cameras, you can push the Olympus E-P2 to 6400 but not without entering the grainy zone. Interestingly, neither the E-P1 nor the E-P2 come with an on board flash. The basis for this choice appears to be the fairly useless nature of on board flashes.

With the E-P2, Olympus created a camera body that almost resembles those of the mid 1900's. That is however, until you turn it around and find the controls which are intuitively placed but still require a bit of a learning curve for fumbling in the dark. You also have to give up any reliance on an optical view although the electronic viewfinder does an outstanding job in bringing the picture composition up close.

One word about the lenses for the Olympus E-P2 camera: the selection is both generous and larger than originally expected, thanks to adapter rings that allow you to use Panasonic's Micro Four Thirds Lenses. Olympus has also begun to manufacture their own Micro Four Third Lenses, which are essentially smaller versions of traditionally bulky lenses.

The Olympus PEN E-P2 is an improvement over the E-P1, but at about $300 more, you have to weigh the value. For some photographers, the electronic viewfinder alone would make this camera appealing. Quite honestly, the biggest selling point is likely the ability to use smaller lenses that are fully functional without weighing down your camera bag.
