Olympus released the Tough series of cameras last year: a series of cameras that basically hold up to any abuse that you can dish out and still keep going. The Olympus TG-610 digital camera is the latest edition of the Tough series of cameras, although they have been rebadged with the "TG" model ID.

Still, the Olympus TG-610 does perform in the extremes just like the original Tough cameras do (such as the Tough 8010), but with even more features to make the Olympus TG-610 camera the toughest of the "Tough"!

The feature that I found the most appealing to the Olympus TG-610 is the camera's ability to create or generate 3D images. Unlike other 3D able cameras, the TG-610 does not have two lenses from which to generate the two images necessary to create one 3D image. Instead, you turn on the 3D imaging, press the shutter, then pan the camera to let the TG610 capture the same still photo from an entirely different angle.

3D is really still in the gimmick phase of camera technology. It's not something that you have to have, nor is it really ready for anything more than something interesting that you can do with a camera. But it does add to the value of an already stacked digital camera.

The Olympus TG-610 is a great little point-and-shoot camera outside of the 3D tech. With 14 megapixels to play with when shooting single shots, the 610's ability to create dynamic and rich photos is right there with its competitors. Having a sensor capable of 14 megapixels also helps out when thinking of using the camera as an underwater camera as well, since this will clear up the photos a good deal. Plus the TG-610 is able to detect that it has been submerged and can automatically correct the white balance necessary to generate great quality underwater photos. Take the camera up to 16 feet under the surface, and still the shots are as clear as they can be (if the water is clear enough of course).

The Olympus TG-610 camera isn't just a waterproof camera, but also freeze and shock proof. Take the camera to the beach during the summer season for some underwater photography, and then take it to the slopes in the winter for some family snow photos! In between drop it here and there from no more than 5 feet, and the TG-610 camera just keeps going like nothing has bothered it.

Olympus chose to upgrade the TG-610 by moving the controlling buttons on the camera around to allow for a much larger screen than the preceding cameras. The Tough series began with 2.7" LCD screen with just 230k available to the screen. With the release of the TG-610, you now have a 3-inch LCD screen with more than 4 times the amount of resolution at screen level (920k). The higher resolution screen makes it far easier to see the shot you've setup in bright light, and definitely helps more from an underwater perspective.

As usual, we don't want to forget to mention the TG-610 camera's video ability. Yes, video recording is even available in the extremes (water, below freezing), but it's better than that. The Olympus TG-610 can record in 720p format and underwater of course. The older Olympus 6020 could also do this also, but the larger LCD that we mentioned above makes HD video recording that much easier.

Waterproof cameras might not be the exact need for most looking for a new point-and-shoot camera. So maybe the "toughness" of the TG-610 is a bit of overkill in those instances. But the fact that the camera is available in practically any situation you might find yourself in does serve a purpose in allowing you to be mobile in whatever plans you might have for vacation or just every day life. In fact, the shockproof abilities of the camera lends the Olympus TG-610 to practically be worth the upscale cost of this point-and-shoot camera! Add in the additional features of the latest in 3D photo technology, a high resolution sensor, and a large and bright LCD, and you have a fine little camera that pays for itself in the end.
