As with most of the newer Onkyo receivers, the HT-RC260 home theater system is built on the latest HDMI software (1.4a) which sets you up rather nicely for 3D video. The cost of 3D televisions is still a bit high for most right now, but when the prices of the TV's gets to a better bargain, the owner of the HT-RC260 receiver won't have to worry about upgrading this system. Couple the 3D capability with the THX Select2 Plus certification, and the Onkyo HT-RC260 receiver is ready to go on the latest technologies!
For those sources which aren't HDMI compatible, the Onkyo HT-RC260 receiver can help with upscaling your older video to 1080p. Using the Faroudja DCDi Cinema processor, the HT-RC260 home theater can upscale any video input to 1080p, regardless of the source. A lot of receivers say they can upscale, but the picture doesn't match the specs. With the DCDi and its ability to remove the choppiness of the older video, making it smoother and clearer, you might just forget that you are watching an upscaled version of non-HD video.
While you want the best possible sound available on your receiver, there are times when you might not want the volume fluctuations. The Onkyo HT-RC260 helps with that by also including Audssey's Dynamic Volume software. Dynamic Volume keeps the volume constant within your entertainment, equalizing the volume as it fluctuates (especially with commercials), but still providing the best range of sound available. In effect, Dynamic Volume keeps commercials from ruining your sound experience.
The HT-RC260 also compensates for the compression ratios found in digital music. Compressed files like MP3's or AAC (Apple) tend to lose higher frequency sound during compression, but the Onkyo HT-RC260 attempts to recover or at the very least enhance those frequencies during playback so that the loss isn't as noticeable. Other receivers may not try to fix compressed files, and it will definitely be noticeable as the music is played through the home theater system.
The Onkyo HT-RC260 receiver is iPhone/iPod ready as well as HD radio proven. Unfortunately, to use those devices as a part of the receiver, a separately sold dock is necessary to connect them to the HT-RC260. This is pretty much the standard for all home theater receivers, but that doesn't make it a right in my opinion. We feel at least the iPod dock should be included since so many people own those devices. Including this would definitely give the receiver a leg up on its competition.
And finally, Onkyo makes setup on the HT-RC260 home theater easier with the built-in GUI interface. Setup or reconfiguration can be completed at any time you want, even during a movie or show, with the almost transparent menu options set above the video being displayed. There are 4 preset modes to choose from during setup, or configure you own, on the fly, as needed.
