Continuing researching into quality entry level receivers is our review of the Onkyo TX-SR508 home theater receiver. The similarities between the TX-SR508 and the HT-S3300 are there of course, being from the same manufacturer, but the differences are enough to warrant a look at both systems.
The Onkyo TX-SR508 home theater receiver is a 7.1 channel system which gives you the ability to best optimize the system as a complete surround sound system (depending on your choice of speakers of course). With Dolby Pro Logic IIz, you can use two high speakers in the surround configuration instead of two back speakers to provide a much more focused ambient sound delivery.

You will use the very handy on-screen display to setup your Onkyo TX-SR508 system to the specific acoustics of your living or entertainment room. The Onkyo TX-SR508 home theater receiver includes four HDMI ports for plugging in all of your devices to the receiver. You might have more than four devices, but most just have a cable/satellite box, gaming console, and a Blu-ray player to hook up through HDMI. Use the last one for an HDMI-ready camera or camcorder, and we feel like 4 HDMI ports are pretty sufficient for most users of entry-level receivers.
The HDMI software on the Onkyo TX-SR508 receiver is 3D ready, meaning that when you decide to upgrade your HDTV to a 3D television, the Onkyo TX-SR508 receiver is ready! If your source is produced via Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master, you'll also have the added benefit of listening to audio as the original artists heard it! All are decoded as loseless formats, making the audio you hear through the TX-SR508 receiver identical to the master tracks heard in the studio.
The Onkyo TX-SR508 home theater receiver also features Onkyo's Audyssey software. I personally think this is the best feature of all since Audyssey equalizes the volume on your entertainment to where you don't need to continually adjust the volume as the sound gets louder or softer. Where Audyssey shines is in the area of network or cable television volume control. Everyone knows that commercials are louder than the show being watched, but with Audyssey, the volume is equalized for you.
For those of you with an iPhone or iPod, you have the option of purchasing an Onkyo dock for your device to connect the iPhone or iPod directly to the TX-SR508 receiver. The dock is very handy in allowing the owner of this Onkyo to view or listen to the entertainment stored on the Apple device without needing to repurchase in another format.
All in all, we feel that the Onkyo TX-SR508 home theater receiver provides exactly what the shopper searching for an entry level home theater receiver needs to have. With the 7.1 channel tuner, plenty of HDMI ports, and the Audyssey volume and equalization system, you'll find the TX-SR508 provides a better quality-price ratio. Couple those options with the excellent quality surround sound system that Onkyo is known for, and you would be hard-pressed to find a better home theater receiver at the price the TX-SR508 currently sells for today.
