Panasonic DMP-BDT310 3D Blu-ray Player

When beginning this review of the Panasonic DMP-BDT310 3D Blu-ray player, I realized I could probably be a little lazy with it. You see, I've already reviewed it's predecessor, the BDT210, and there is really only one difference in the two at first glance: the addition of the second HDMI port. But of course, with every new "step up" model of Blu-ray player, there are a few tweaks and fixes associated with each player. Otherwise, there wouldn't be a need to create a new one, right?

The Panasonic DMP-BDT310 Blu-ray player is designed to be a low cost 3D Blu-ray player for those wanting to get into 3D tech without having to spend a ton of money. Like it's predecessor, the BDT310 player has that great lifelike 3D effect that you want, and doesn't skimp on the picture quality at all.

Of course, the quality is going to depend upon the 3D capable HDTV that you own, but this Panasonic Blu-ray player can absolutely up to par with every 3D HDTV on the market in terms of picture quality.

A feature of the Panasonic DMP-BDT310 Blu-ray player that we really like is the option to change 3D movies into 2D, or to reduce the, um, 3D-ish view on movies. Sometimes you just want to give your eyes a rest, or you don't want to wear the 3D glasses, but still want to enjoy your movies. I know I do!

But most 3D players will not allow you to reduce 3D into 2D. The BDT310 player allows for adjustments to extreme 3D to flattening the picture entirely into 2D. And that one feature makes the Panasonic BDT310 worth the price.

Also like it's predecessor, the BDT210, the Panasoic DMP-BDT310 player can also play all of your 2D movies. There's no need to repurchase your favorites as 3D if you don't want to. And there's no need to keep any other DVD or Blu-ray players around the house just to play your older movies.

You could probably see this coming with the 3D adjustments I mentioned above, but the Panasonic BDT310 can also upconvert your 2D Blu-ray discs into 3D. 3D isn't that hard to create from 2D by today's technology: just add shadowing and offset imaging, and you've got it. No, it's not the same as being filmed in 3D, but still if you choose to convert the 2D Blu-ray into 3D using the BDT310, you will feel like you are watching a 3D movie.

The Panasonic DMP-BDT310 Blu-ray player also includes the ability to wirelessly stream movies and other internet content directly to your television. Just like other Blu-ray players, you have the option of watching Netflix and Amazon on Demand video (both require a subscription), and then free options like Youtube and Pandora. Ebay, Twitter, and Facebook feeds are also available to you via the BDT310 player along with AccuWeather and a news portal.

The option to hook the BDT310 player up to the internet is also available via ethernet, if you do not have a wireless router, and still want to enjoy this content. A word of caution though: outside of the fastest internet connections available, the quality via internet streaming will not be the same as you get from Blu-ray. We do not have the best services in my area, and I've never seen great quality through Netflix that compares to Blu-ray. Maybe those with FiOS would disagree, but be prepared for less than stellar quality!

Just like the BDT210, the Panasonic BDT310 does not include any onboard storage. This is still a problem for me, as I think storage is a necessary component for streaming video just for buffering. The player does have a slot for an SD card, and also two USB ports. But those are for watching content, not caching incoming streams.

What Panasonic did fix with the Panasonic BDT310 player is the additional HDMI port. You can get by with just one HDMI port, but for those who have both an HDTV and a great quality audio system, having the two HDMI outputs provides a way for them to achieve the best video with the best sound in their homes.

While I still wish that Panasonic had included a little storage with the DMP-BDT310 player, I can see two valid reasons for purchasing the BDT310 over the BDT210. One if the additional HDMI, if you own or will be owning an audio system to complement your 3D-ready HDTV. And the other is in the fixes for the apps on the device, specifically the internet apps like Netflix. While the BDT210 is cheaper, cheaper models do not normally get as many updates as the higher cost models like the 310, so I would go with the Panasonic DMP-BDT310 Blu-ray player and pay just slightly more in price.
