Following up yesterday's super expensive camera review, I thought I would go a different route and review the super cheap Panasonic Lumix DMC-F2 digital camera. The Panasonic DMC-F2 is a sub $100 point-and shoot camera which makes it vastly different than most camera reviews we do, but that doesn't mean it's not a great camera!  In fact, the Lumix DMC-F2 offers a lot more than you would expect in an $89 camera purchase!

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-F2 camera features a 10.1 megapixel resolution with 4x optical zoom which is fairly standard in a camera at this price point. However, for those who want to be able to zoom in just a bit closer, the DMC-F2 camera can max out at 7.8x optical zoom if you will turn the resolution down to 3 megapixels instead of the normal 10.1. With digital zoom, that gives a maximum zoom of 28.4x for this camera!

Granted, the noise levels and blur will be greater at 3 megapixels, so it's best to use this feature on very still subjects to get the best possible shot. But there are very few cameras at this price range that are capable of more than 4x zoom, giving the Panasonic F2 a slight edge.

The Panasonic DMC-F2 (or F2K for the very popular black model) is also capable of recording 640x480 resolution video at 30 frames per second. Other more expensive cameras can do that, 720p, and even higher, but for most short videos taken by everyone outside of the semi-professional photographer level, 480 is a very good resolution to record in.

You'll use a 2.5" LCD screen for shot setup, shot selection, menu options, and photo/video playback on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-F2 camera. There isn't a viewfinder, which is standard on this level of point-and-shoot camera. The camera is fairly small which gives the LCD the 2.5" size instead of the normal 2.7" size, but the view is still good, and the button layout still comfortable enough for most photographers.

The Panasonic Lumix F2 also features "intelligent scene selection" which automatically chooses the type of scene you are trying to shoot (night, portrait, macro) by making determinations from the available light and focus point. This feature frees up the photographer to allow more of a mental focus on the scene being shot, and less on the actual scene setup.

If these features sound like exactly what you need and would rather pay less than $100 for you next point-and-shoot camera, then we strongly recommend the high quality Panasonic DMC-F2 camera. The F2 can create up to 300 high quality photos on a single charge, make it a great little camera for a day or weekend excursion. If you don't mind spending around $50 more to get a wide angle lens, little higher resolution, and a slightly larger LCD, then we recommend the Panasonic DMC-F3. But be sure to take a closer look at least at the very popular black DMC-F2K camera as shown above before you make your decision.
