Having a higher resolution is always great to see on brand new cameras of course, but Panasonic changed the FZ40's sensor for another reason as well. The lens on the Panasonic Lumix FZ40 is completely new and different from the FZ35. The 25 millimeter Leica DC Vario Elmarit lens is an ultra wide angled lens which is needed to allow the Lumix FZ40 to have such a large zoom field of play. This particular Leica lens is also used in the higher priced FZ100 camera, but obviously functions in the same way and with the same quality in the Panasonic FZ40.

Experienced photographers will not be disappointed with the Panasonic FZ40 due to the ability to adjust just about any control you would like as if you were using a DSLR camera. Panasonic designed a "jog dial" into the FZ40 to allow for manual changes in the focus, aperture setting, or shutter speed. Focus is the easiest to manually fix with the jog dial, based on your creative needs, but aperture and shutter speed only requires a little more time at first until you are used to the controls. Of course all of these can be put on automatic for the newer photographer or if you just don't want to spend a lot of time adjusting. The Panasonic FZ40 works as quickly as you want, fully automatic, semi-automatic, or full manual.

As a high performance camcorder, the Panasonic Lumix FZ40 does a superb job in capturing video quickly and in HD format. Recording at 720p, movies are stored in the AVCHD Lite format which allows for a longer recording experience than other digital point and shoot cameras in the FZ40's class of camera. HD recording is incredibly easy due to the built-in recording button on the FZ40 which allows for an easy start and stop of video recording.

You will probably want a little more than an electronic viewfinder to use in recording HD video, and Panasonic efficiently designed the Lumix FZ40 to be able to include a rather large 3" LCD. With 100% field of view, the new owner of the FZ40 camera should find it very easy to use the camera to record or shoot stills with the LCD display. The LCD is an automatic or manual feature, which means you can save a little power by using the viewfinder instead, and only turning on the LCD when needed.

For the price you might pay on the Panasonic Lumix FZ40 camera, you get all of the great features available on the older FZ35 with the additions of a better sensor which provides a higher resolution, HD recording with AVCHD Lite, and some of the fastest focus times available today. Plus you get the unexpected addition of a 25 millimeter ultra-wide angle lens from Leica that is used on the higher end FZ100 camera. The Panasonic Lumix FZ40 is therefore a middle of the road compact point and shoot camera which has the best of the bargain cameras with the features of some of the higher end cameras. The FZ40 serves those looking for one step up from the beginner class of cameras, and we think it does a great job in that respect!
