The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 camera is being hailed by many as the replacement for the DSLR camera that is too bulky and big. As a micro four-thirds camera, the GF1 has done away with the large reflex mirror and optical viewfinder that are usually features on SLR cameras. The Lumix DMC-GF1 has interchangeable lens capability that uses the Micro Four Thirds standard. There is an adaptor ring that will allow existing Four Thirds lenses to be mounted but the Auto Focus only works on lenses that are compatible with the contrast-detect AF.

The Panasonic Lumix GF1 has exactly what is needed in a utilitarian style. It doesn’t need to imitate retro to be beautiful. Even though it is small it feels solid and weighs, with battery and card, 346g (12.2 ounces) and it measures, without added lenses, 119 x 71 x 36.3mm (4.68 x 2.79 x 1.43 inches) and has an overall tight feel.

It’s an easy camera to hold and handle with a small finger grip in the front and a textured plastic thumb grip. These combined grips make one handed carrying safe. The lens release button is on the right of the lens and the AF Assist lamp is just under the Lumix logo. The edge of the built in pop up flash can also be seen from the front. If there is any trouble viewing the LCD screen there is a connector for an optional External Live Viewfinder.
