The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS10 digital camera is an upgrade to the extremely popular Panasonic ZS7. And while most camera makers just fix a couple of bugs found in the preceding camera, Panasonic chose instead to completely upgrade the ZS7 with the release of the Lumix DMC-ZS10 camera!

Because the ZS series of cameras are meant for travel photography, you expect a lot of zoom. And in the ZS10, we have more zoom, and more power behind the zoom than in last year's cameras. Panasonic also chose to switch out the LCD screen for a touch screen interface, to allow for more control from behind the scenes. And to top the camera off, the Panasonic DMC-ZS10 has a new and faster sensor in the 14.1 megapixel MOS sensor. But are those features enough to warrant the high price tag that the ZS10 camera currently carries?

As stated briefly, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS10 camera is a part of the travel zoom series of cameras that Panasonic invented a few years ago. Travel zooms are known for their ever increasing amount of zoom coupled with extremely wide (ultrawide) lens. The Panasonic ZS10 has both with 16x optical zoom available from the 24mm Leica DC Vario-Elmar lens. This combination gives the photographer the maximum amount of space at the highest zoom for capturing those large landscape photos during our travels.

With additional zoom, image processing speed could take a beating, but Panasonic resolved this issue by adding a new MOS sensor to the Lumix DMC-ZS10 camera. The 14.1 megapixel MOS sensor increases the amount of pixels available on the ZS10 from the ZS7, but keeps the image processing speed practically the same.

Some reviews have mentioned that the image quality from the Lumix DMC-ZS10 camera isn't as good as it should be. I can agree that the photos are a bit washed out, but I also choose to note that most travel zoom compact cameras have a less than desirable image. That is, if you are comparing the photos created by the ZS10 or its counterparts against a DSLR camera. The photos will of course be worse in this instance. But as travel zoom cameras go, the photos created by the MOS sensor are as good, if not better, than most of the other travel zoom cameras available.

The Panasonic DMC-ZS10 camera's touch screen is pretty standard as far as touchscreens go. The ZS10 sports a 3" touch screen and allows the photographer to control most of the camera's functions by touching the screen. Zoom and focus are fairly standard applications associated with camera touchscreens, but the Lumix ZS10 also allows for the shutter to be released with a simple touch. And then video playback to also be automatically replayed with a simple touch.

Speaking of video, the Lumix ZS10 offers HD video in 1080p at a 60 frame rate if recording in its standard of AVCHD Lite. The camera also allows for the switch to 720p so you can save a little memory with your video (most of us don't really notice the difference between 1080p and 720p anyway).

One neat little feature that's brand new to the Panasonic ZS10 camera is the ability to create 3D images from your photography. when turned on, the 3D Photo Mode takes 20 quick photos, then selects the two that will best display the photo in 3D quality. You will of course need a 3D display to view these photos in 3D, but it's still a neat feature that brings new life to photography without a lot of 3D equipment being added.

And finally, tagging photos with the location the photo or video was taken can't be more necessary than when traveliing. And so, it stands to reason that the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS10 camera would include a GPS unit. Turn on the GPS, and the camera will constantly send and receive messages to the satellites flying overhead to automatically determine your location while traveling about. The GPS does use a bit more battery, which means less photos, but it does make it easier to locate where a photo was taken after the fact. I do recommend that if the GPS is something you will want to use, do turn it on before you begin your photography adventure. The Lumix ZS10 does take a couple of minutes to determine its location. You probably won't want to turn it on at every photo stop, wasting time waiting on this to activate.

For a travel zoom camera, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS10 camera has a lot to offer: new sensor, more zoom, ability to create 3D images, and even a GPS service. The price is a bit higher than most other travel zoom cameras, but what you give up in price, you get in return with many options!
