It's rare to find a high quality point-and-shoot camera that is relatively unknown, even just a few weeks out from first being available for sale, but that's exactly what I've found in the Panasonic ZS9 digital camera (Even in the reviews I've read, the comments suggest that this is really the ZS8, but it's not). The Panasonic ZS9, the latest edition of the ZS camera line featuring probably the best Leica DC lens available on this type of camera, is still relatively unknown to most camera dealers and thus to camera buyers. But the features available on the DMC-ZS9 camera should quickly make it the top point-and-shoot camera at least during the upcoming holiday season, but more than likely for several years to come! The Panasonic DMC-ZS9 digital camera is a 14.1 megapixel rated camera using a CCD sensor, which typically means you're getting fairly close to the top in what's available in any consumer camera. But Panasonic has taken it a step further by providing the camera with the Leica DC Vario-Elmar lens, which is known for being best at creating extremely clear shots when using the camera outfitted with the lens in telephoto situations.

Point-and-shoot cameras don't do so well with telephoto, though right? Typically the zoom is too low to even need a lens with superb telephoto abilities when the camera can't handle it. Ah, but we'd be wrong with the Panasonic ZS9, as this camera is fully capable of allowing 16x optical zoom. That's not usually seen in a compact camera, but here it is. And to top it off, the Panasonic ZS9 also carries the standard (or typical) 4x digital zoom for a maximum zoom of 64x out of the camera.

Now with digital zoom, we don't typically recommend that you use all you can there along with all of the optical zoom available, as the noise from the digital can interfere with the high quality picture being captured by the lens. But the Leica lens is so clear, play around with it a little to see what you can get from 64x zoom on the DMC-ZS9. Low light situations are going to obviously be way more noisy at maximum zoom, but take some midday photos, and there might be a surprise waiting for you in the end result.

The Panasonic DMC-ZS9 digital camera could get close to DSLR-lite quality if it weren't for the lack of the viewfinder. And so, like 99% of the compact cameras available, the ZS9 features a 3-inch LCD screen. This is frankly our only gripe with the Panasonic ZS9 camera, in that it does lack a touchscreen. Maybe that's not something that you want in a camera, and would prefer to have the controls. Me, I would prefer to have a bit of both, or at least see one of the ZS-series cameras with a touchscreen.

I'm afraid that iPhones and Android devices are coming closer to taking over compact cameras with the way their onboard cameras are developing. But the lack of the touchscreen might be Panasonic's way of saying that the DMC-ZS9 is a serious camera, and not a toy like the iPhone 4S. And that if you want high quality photos in any setting (low light being an example), and if you want zoom that actually looks good without tons of digital noise, then a camera like the Panasonic DMC-ZS9 digital camera is absolutely the way to go.

Because it's relatively unknown as we mentioned, there are not as many Panasonic ZS9 cameras for sale as we would like to see, at least used models anyway. But we can strongly suggest that this camera should be a winner this holiday season!
