You should expect 1080p upscaling on any modern A/V receiver, and the Pioneer VSX-1020-K A/V receiver does have that feature. However, Pioneer added a little something extra to this system in the ability to customize the zones you have available. You can have the VSX-1020-K receiver setup in the standard 7.1 channel zone for one room (or the entire house), or you can add in a second zone in a 5.1 + 2 configuration for the ability to play another input device. There aren't many A/V receivers in this price range that will accomodate the addition of an extra zone, so if you need or want the ability to setup dual zones on your home theater, then the VSX-1020-K receiver should be on your list.
The Pioneer VSX-1020-K A/V receiver gives you all the inputs you could possibly need to customize your home theater in the way that you want. Plenty of HDMI ports (6 in; 1 out) are available for multiple devices. This includes one front HDMI for easy to reach use allowing you to connect an HD camcorder, so you can view all of your videos on your home theater in amazing clarity. The standard range of coax and component video input and output ports are built in, with specific ports for your HDTV, DVD, and satellite. Pioneer built an input specifically for Sirius radio, if you have that service, along with Bluetooth to connect any Bluetooth device you want (including the iPhone). All in all, I would say the Pioneer VSX-1020-K reciver gives you all the connections you need for your home theater components, so you can watch movies, listen to music, view video or photos from your digital camera (via the front USB port). Once you receive it and hook it up, you'll see that the versatility of this receiver in unbelievable.
You can also add a Bluetooth adapter for a wireless connection for music from your iPhone or smart phone. The VSX-1020's advanced sound technology is a state-of-the-art sound retriever, that turns even compressed MP3s into nearly CD quality pieces of music.
