Plymouth Barracuda Review

The Plymouth Barracuda evolved over three generations to become one of the most coveted muscle cars in the world. The “64”to”66”generation Barracuda was based on the Plymouth Valiant’s A-body base. The second generation of the Barracuda saw some dramatic changes to the A-body. At the time, the Barracuda was still based on the Valiant, but customers had some serious choices to make on body style, the fastback, notchback, or convertible. The pony car was well on its way to muscle car status.

In 1970 a whole new Barracuda rolled off the assembly line. Any trace that was left of the Valiant was gone. The new model was built on a shorter but wider version of the E-body. This was the same platform used for the new Dodge Challenger, but the wheel base on the Challenger was two inches longer. The Barracuda went from economy car to muscle car. There were three versions offered, a base model, the luxury grand coupe, and the high performance sport coupe, “The Cuda”. The E-body allowed more room in the engine bay when compared to the A-body. The extra room under the hood was needed for the release of Chrysler’s new 426 Hemi. The big block Plymouth Barracudas and the 440 and the Hemi’s had upgraded suspension and modified structural components that improved traction to the rear wheels and improved handling. A Spicer built Dana 60 heavy duty rear axle with a 9 ¾ inch ring gear was standard equipment with the standard transmission and available as an option on the automatic transmission. There was no shortage of selection when it came to engines. Two available slant six engines, 198cu in, 225cu in. And six V-8 engines were available, 318cu in., 340cu in., 360cu in., 383cu in., 426 Hemi and the 440cu in. In 1971changes to the Barracuda were mostly cosmetic.

This was the year the gills on the corner panels appeared. In 1971 the option of a four barrel carburetor was dropped in favor of the six-pack carburetor. The 426 Hemi powered, convertible Barracuda is one of the most valuable muscle cars. Only eleven of these models were built. Seven went for sale in the US. One of the eleven built was reported to be sold for two million dollars. The Barracuda remained pretty much unchanged all the way up to 1974 when the big block engines were no longer offered. The 318cu.in was now offered as the base motor. With the increase of insurance surcharges for high performance cars on the rise, the cost of fuel going up, and strict emission standards that robbed horse power from the muscle car.

Production ended for the Plymouth Barracuda ten years to the day, on April 1, 1974. All is not lost; rumors have a rebirth of the Barracuda. It would be hard to recapture a time gone by, when muscle cars ruled the road.
