Polaroid GL10 Printer Review – Instant Printer With One Glaring Problem

Part of the problem with smartphone photos is that it's not easy to share physical copies of the photos. Sure, you can email, Instagram, Facebook, or stick the photo on Twitter for all to see. But what if you want to share a photo with someone that doesn't have access to one of those services, or just want a keepsake photo you can physically hold? This is where the Polaroid GL10 Instant Printer fits. The Polaroid GL10 can instantly print a retro 3-inch by 4-inch Polaroid photo that you can pass around or share as soon as it prints.

The Polaroid GL10 instant printer photo paper (see here for replacements) will almost remind you of the old Polaroid photos which I still remember shaking to get the photo to come through. This paper is somewhat like that, where the "ink" is designed into the "Zink" paper itself and materializes once the GL10 sets heat to it. It's too complex for me to worry about here, but it's safe to say that owning the Polaroid GL10 printer will not require changes to $40 ink cartridges. All you need is the printer, the batteries that power it, and the special Zink paper, and you can do some photo printing.

The one glaring problem with the Polaroid GL10 instant printer is in what is supported, and it's not really Polaroid's fault. Reviewers of the GL10 who haven't seen the printer in action may tell you that the printer is iPhone compatible. It is most definitely not. Android, Blackberry, and most Windows OS phones are compatible using the Bluetooth interface with the printer. However, Apple doesn't allow just any product to interface with its Bluetooth configuration and the Polaroid GL10 printer is one of those unfortunate products that is left out.

If you do own an iPhone and still want to use the Polaroid GL10 as a photo printer, the only option available is to get the photos over to your Windows or Mac computer via Bluetooth, USB connection, or email. Once the files are placed on the computer, you can either use the Bluetooth interface on the computer to send the photos back to the printer, or just connect the GL10 directly to the computer with the USB port.

Not to be left out, actual digital cameras can also be used to send photos to the GL10 instant printer. And like the computer interfaces, if Bluetooth is available on the camera, try that option first. If not, most cameras have USB interfaces, and that should do the trick. Because there are so many cameras, it's difficult to say which ones will work the best or at all, but we do know that Panasonic, Canon, Nikon, and Samsung cameras for the most part can interface with the Polaroid GL10 printer.

Polaroid GL10 Instant Printer Photos

As far as image quality, I think it's best to keep in mind that the camera is designed to generate physical photos on the fly quickly. As such, don't expect the highest level of detail in the shots. Think about the image quality of the photos you might take with your camera phone as opposed to a 60D DSLR and you will find that the photos more closely resemble the lower quality camera.

That said, we think the Polaroid GL10 printer is a fantastic way to take some fun shot and have them displayed very quickly. Photographers at parties and other social gatherings can find some good uses for taking candid shots and displaying the photos quickly where everyone in attendance can browse them during the same day or night. The Polaroid GL10 can generate one shot in under a minute and the batteries are good for around 35 shots, giving you time to take your candid photos, and then get back into the party yourself!
