Red Nintendo Wii 25th Anniversary Console Reviewed

I thought the red Nintendo Wii was a console option that was here to stay, so I had chosen not to review it for that very reason. But in fact the red Wii is officially named the Nintendo Wii 25th Anniversary edition, and will only be available for a limited time (much like the red Nintendo DSi XL). Just because something is limited, doesn't really mean that it has more features than it's predecessors, and that's almost completely true of the Nintendo Wii 25th Anniversary console. As you will see in our review of the red Wii below, if your home already owns a Wii, the only reason the red Wii would be needed is because you like to collect the different colors.

The red Nintendo Wii 25th Anniversary console is absolutely like the white and black Wii consoles, with the same exceptions in all three: color of the console and controller and of course the bundled games. The 25th anniversary Wii console, controller, and nunchuck are all manufactured in a very rich and bright red with the exception being the gray base. The closest you can come to a Wii controller of this red color is the pink controller, which our own family owns. We wondered why there wasn't a red variety instead when we initially purchased our black Wii, but the release of the red 25th Anniversary Wii has obviously answered that question!

Two games are bundled with the red 25th Anniversary Wii. For a change of pace, instead of Wii Sports Resort (which was packaged with previous Wii consoles), the red Wii includes the latest New Super Mario Bros. game. This new Super Mario Bros. game is based on the original and very popular game, but with a twist: it's multi-player! So now instead of just Mario running through the side-scrolling environment, an additional character can be added. By itself, New Super Mario Bros. is a $30-$40 value, which actually makes the red Wii console a better buy then the previous two consoles.
The 25th Anniverary Wii is still bundled with the same Wii sports game that came with the white and black Wii consoles, but we think that's just fine. Wii sports shows off how great the controllers work based on the player's body motions, and should be played often by the owners of the Wii.
The one item I would have liked seen added to the 25th Anniversary Wii is the ability to display the content in HD format. As of now, none of the Nintendo Wii consoles support anything higher than a 480 resolution, leaving your television's 720p or 1080p abilities unnecessary. The PS3 and Xbox 360 both allow for 1080p format, which makes the Wii behind the times as far as HD quality goes. Please note that you can purchase HD cables to connect to the Wii, but they do not really do anything, so you can save your money. Maybe if the connection between the Wii and a home theater system is that can upconvert the component signal, then maybe a difference in video quality can be seen. But the cable itself just won't do.
The red Wii console itself has the same Wii channels as the other colorful consoles. You have the forecast, news, and internet channels. Virtual Console and Wiiware for downloading classic Nintendo games are also available; you will need to add Nintendo points to your account to purchase games like Super Mario 64, etc.
If our family did not already own the black Nintendo Wii, we would more than likely purchase the 25th Anniversary red Nintendo Wii, but just because of the addition of New Super Mario Bros. It's a great colorful addition to the Nintendo Wii console lineup, but the addition of this game really makes the 25th Anniversary Wii console stand out from the rest!
