My current car is beginning to get very close to the 100,000 mark, a mark which has typically meant more problems than not in past vehicles, so I've been looking around at fuel-efficient used cars. And I had almost settled on a Toyota Prius when I ran across an article about replacement Toyota Prius batteries. Ouch! While typical car batteries are in the $60 to $200 range, a replacement Toyota Prius battery can run between $1,000 and $3,000 (used to new), depending on whether you purchase the battery pack by itself or add on cabling, the fan, and other attachments.

Because I like to purchase used cars, I do want to look at the replacement costs of the equipment on the cars, but this Prius battery replacement cost is something new to me. Typically, the cars I purchased used are somewhere in the 60,000 range, but with the Prius I might also need to add in the cost of replacing the battery. Each of the hybrid batteries is warranted for around 100,000 miles. And for those that think that through, this warranty means that Toyota tests have shown that the battery should make it to this point in almost every case.

If the goal is to keep the car just until 100,000 miles, then one might not have to purchase a replacement Toyota Prius battery. But if one wants to take the car further than that, the the price of replacing this battery has to be taken into consideration.

Here's the good news, though! With each successful model year, we have more of the Toyota Prius cars on the road. And the more on the road, the more the cost of replicating the parts in each car will reduce. The replacement cost of the Toyota Prius battery has already dropped more than half from the initial price of over $5,000. And with failure rates of the Prius battery below one percent of all the vehicles produced so far (and with the majority of those in the initial phase), the chance of needing to replace the battery is low.

Still, I think if I do decide to go with the Toyota Prius, I'll keep to my standard of looking for a used car with miles closer to 50,000, just in case I were to get a bad Toyota Prius battery at the 100,000 mile mark!
