One issue with the mass production of so many 3D Blu-ray players at one time is that the manufacturers miss sometimes. Usually it's something minimal that a firmware update can take care of fairly quickly. In fact, most new Blu-ray players being released today need a firmware update sooner than later. But the Samsung BD-D5500 3D Blu-ray player has the disappointing distinction of needing a firmware update immediately. Whether or not this should stop you from purchasing the Samsung BD-D5500 player will be your choice, of course, but maybe our review of the D5500 can help you out just a bit.

As of this writing (May 2011), the Samsung BD-D5500 3D Blu-ray player will sporadically play Blu-ray discs (3D and not). Some discs will play, some will play after loading for a very long time, and some Blu-ray discs will not play at all on the BD-D5500 player (those that require additional memory to play). So we strongly recommend that if you purchase the BD-D5500, that you immediately hook it into your internet connection and install the firmware updates.

The good news is that the firmware updates for the Samsung BD-D5500 Blu-ray player fix this problem, as they should since not addressing the problem is a mass fail. Who wants a Blu-ray player that won't play Blu-ray discs? Yeah, me either!

So, once you have the firmware issues out of the way, the Samsung BD-D5500 3D is actually a very good Blu-ray player. The features of playing 3D Blu-ray discs in full 1080p are here without issues, as is the ability to up convert your traditional 2D Blu-ray discs to 3D (with the use of shadowing and double layering). DVD's are also still playable through the BD-D5500 and will upconvert to HD quality as well, although not to 3D quality. Just one up conversion process per disc type, so if you want 3D for one of your favorite DVD's, you will need to at least buy it as a 2D Blu-ray disc.

The Samsung BD-D5500 3D Blu-ray player also has Samsung's latest streaming content service built into the device (and it works without the firmware update). Samsung's Smart TV uses a "Smart Hub" to centralize the viewing or listening of content that you own or content that is available via the internet. Your content, whether a USB stick or another computer on your home network, becomes searchable and available via Smart TV on the D5500 player. Samsung apps such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, Pandora, and Youtube are also available on the Smart Hub for streaming content via the internet (some subscriptions required). Twitter and Facebook are also available to the BD-D5500 Blu-ray player Smart TV hub.

Due to the cheap price of the Samsung BD-D5500 player, a few things are missing. We would have liked to seen built-in wireless connectivity with the D5500. Instead you have the standard ethernet port for connecting the player to the internet. If your entertainment center is near a free port, then you will be fine here. If not, you will need to spring for the additional Samsung wireless adapter. Because of the firmware issues, internect connectivity in some form is going to be necessary if purchasing now.

The Samsung BD-D5500 3D player does not have built-in storage which isn't normally necessary. However, some 3D disc sets have content that requires additional storage on the device playing the discs. The disc packaging will let you know if additional storage is needed, and in those cases, the need to attach a USB storage stick to the D5500 player will be necessary. I know the reasons for not adding storage to the player is due to keeping the BD-D5500 dimensions small. But it would have been nice for Samsung to just throw in a $10 USB stick for the new owner.

I found a lot of issues with the Samsung BD-D5500 3D Blu-ray player that I would like to have been addressed prior to shipping the device, so it's difficult to recommend that one purchases this device. However, the low price of the player itself still allows me to recommend it just on that factor alone. There are few 3D players on the market that are below $200. Maybe this one is lower because Samsung knows the new owner will face some issues they wouldn't normally see in a new player. But in my opinion, the issues are easily solved by downloading and installing the firmware, leaving the Samsung BD-D5500 as a very competent and successful home entertainment Blu-ray player!
